I would love some suggestions about a dog I am boarding, and how to bulk out her food without her gaining weight.
She is a lovely Golden Retreiver x Australian Shepherd, desexed, about 4 years old (basically looks like a black GR with tan and white legs and feathers). I have boarded her a couple of times in the past, and both times she has gone back having gained a bit of weight even though she wasn’t getting a massive amount of food. So yesterday when I picked her up I asked the owner EXACTLY how much she gets, which is basically 2 cups of kibble plus a bone each day. At home she gets about 1 hour’s exercise a day.
It looks so measly in the dish! She definitely has the GR appetite seeming to be constantly hungry, but I can’t help thinking that it doesn’t seem enough for a dog her size. Last time I was giving her 3 cups of kibble, she still put on weight even though she gets heaps more exercise here having other dogs to romp around the paddock with, plus playtime with me.
So my question is – what can I put in her kibble to bulk out her dinner? Tonight I felt so guilty at what seems to be a paltry amount (compared to what I feed the other dogs), I have to feed her separately from the others so she can’t pinch their food. Rice or pasta is a no-no, I’m thinking grated carrot?
I am determined that this time she will go back looking like she arrived, lucky the owners know she loves coming here!
(FYI, another client who lives a few doors down told me that this dog has a reputation in the street, she has been known to sneak into neighbours’ kitchens and nick off with a freshly baked cake, and another time a tub of butter! Ooh better add she is not allowed to wander the street, she found an escape route!)
