I find it soooo frustrating when people critisise me for selling my birds for higher prices. Yes they are more expensive than most breeders but there is a reason why!
For example we sell galahs for $300 - same as pet shop price BUT we make sure they are fed properly, dont sell them unweaned to complete nincompoops, test for PBFD, DNA sex, test for a whole range of diseases, have a health check done at the vet (costs $80 per bird) have nails and wings clipped (if buyer wants them done), we harness train them (harness is included in the price). We handle them everyday and socialise them with lots of birds, people and other animals and get them used to strange surroundings.
Then on top of all that they are sold with a toy, a fortnights worth of their basic seed/pellet mix, a fortnights worth of soaking seed, a 10 page informational pack that is colour printed and bound and a health guarantee plus a baby book (of them growing up). We stay in contact with the people we sell to and answer all their questions. And they can come back for complimentary wing and nail trims and worming/delousing treatments free of charge!
Id say that is better value for money than any pet shop/ bird shop in Perth !! We also offer a full purchase price buy back of the bird if their situation changes down the track - doesnt matter how long after they buy the bird or what condition it is in.
Really we dont make any profit on these birds, if you think a harness costs $40, a health check costs $80, the DNA sexing, disease and PBFD check costs $100 PER BIRD we are spending $220 on each bird before we even add the food costs! Obviously we arent in it for the money lol!
So when people come to me and say "arent you a breeder shouldnt you be charging less than what the pet shop does?" i get really really frustrated. Even when i go through the extras i offer they still think i charge to much.. generally i tell these people to get out and if they want a pet shop bird so much go and buy it from there.!
I guess alot of registered dog breeders would get the same crap from people because they only want to pay the same amount as what youd pay for a back yard bred pup. Even though the registered breeder goes to way more effort and will sell very healthy, well socialised pups.
Sorry Rant over hehe
