Has anyone thought to phone one of these pet shops and ask them what happens to the puppies/kittens they don't sell.
A new one has just opened up in Rundle mall unfortunately - toucan something. We might also phone some of our local ones and ask them where they get their puppies and if the puppies are from registered breeders...
Oh yeah, duh! lol
So what we'd be aiming for is that puppies are never sold from pet shops?
We'd need a much bigger campaign to educate the public on where to go to get their puppies. The shelters - because of the concrete kennels and mesh fencing are pretty traumatic to visit the first few times. I understand why they are the way they are but it still freaks me out. Zoos are trying to move to a different kind of habitat for their animals, it's a pity kennels for dogs can't go the same way.
Quote from Anne in a different thread:
"Taken from the Dogs NSW Code of Ethics.
9. A Member shall not:
(a) sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers or retail pet dealers, who are not accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA).(05/05)
Registered breeders CAN and DO sell their puppies to pet shops and it is endorsed by the state association."
I walked past a pet shop located in the car park at a shopping centre here in Newcastle area. They had 3/4 Staffy & 1/4 Ridgeback puppies in those TINY crates. These pups were not small and there were 2 of them in the same crate...no toys...dirty water...people poking them when they were asleep....walking around in their own poop! Now considering you can get a purebred Staffy puppy from a registered breeder for...well...lets say...$800-$1000........these puppies cost $700! I couldn't keep my mouth shut! There was a lady standing there...interested in the puppies. I told her that these puppies would have come from BYB or Puppy Mills. I explained to her how the poor dogs were treated by those "breeders" and she walked away. One more person who has hopefully been educated! I understand that some pet shop play the guilt game on buyers saying things like...this is the last one...if you don't buy it...it will be put to sleep. If THAT comment shouldn't have alarm bells ringing in your head...then I don't know what. It is not a decomposed lettuce you just throw out when it goes off...it is a living being! They have kids selling these animals to people...kids who have NO experience...knowledge...compassion or anything invested regarding these puppies...it is just pure business! They don't care if these pups end up at the pound in 3 months time due to "poor placements".
I got the puppy mill/byb flyers from Myf yesterday and printed a heap off. I'm currently house/dog minding in a different suburb to mine - I delivered about 30/40 while walking Sheba last night. It felt so good . I had a chat with one man who said they are getting another dog and have been doing lots of researching. They have looked into about 20 breeders across Australia. I was so pleased!!
I am aiming to deliver some around my suburb tonight.
And I have emailed them to friends & family and asked them to pass it on.
