I would have thought a fox terrier or something similar might be too active (and possibly too loud??) to leave at home for that long??? What about a rescue greyhound? Short haired, loving dogs who I hear are very lazy???
I am about to start working similar hours, but my dog is very lazy and sleeps all day. I just need to make sure he gets two walks a day and lots of love while I'm home! Also, I'm going to get a dog walker on some days when I'm away from the house.
Let us know how you go
Wow, firstly, thanks all for your replies! I meant to come back soon, but with house building and all...its just crazy!
I have done some research, and I am going to attempt to adopt a greyhound. Sounds like he/she will be happy to sleep and then spend time on the sofa with me at night!
I did the test, and came up with a weimaraner as my number 1, with Labby's being number 12 and GSD's being number 22 lol.
She is the biggest sook lol, she is sure she's a lap dog! I absolutely adore GSD's, they are the best dogs (IMHO), but of course they aren't without their issues! She has had her moments where I felt like giving her away lol, but I wouldn't truly give her up for the world. I grew up with GSD's, and we have photos of me dressing them up in my pink tutu! Mind you, this was back at the time when they were a really unliked breed.
I waas going to suggest Greyhound but you beat me to it. As for being away from home for long periods - sighthounds are your best bet. The bigger the hounds the better, they will cruise through the day snoozing then relish a half hour walk with you before crashing out on the rug (or couch!) for the night.
Smaller sighthounds can be more high-maintenance temperament wise (Afghans and Salukis spring to mind!), but big guys like Greys, Deerhounds, Borzoi etc are usually pretty laid back.
Many Greys are safe with cats, just be sure you go through a reputable adoption group or foster carer. You will find the majority of people adopting out Greys are honest about them. They don't want the dogs ending up mismatched again - forever homes is the aim!
Don't forget updates and photos!
