Have you done the geek test or the RDOS test? I'm thinking Aspergers shade of Autistic. But it is hard to pick in adults. The directness of comment would be a trait. But it takes more than just that. I posted links for the quizes (quizi?) somewhere here before but I can post them again if you're interested.
The way you describe how you think is typical of a very intelligent person with Aspergers - which would include most of our best scientists, engineers and medical researchers. Leaving a trail of offended people is also typical, and I'd argue that it's a personal choice about what one finds offensive. But that isn't how the offended person sees it usually.
I'm not surprised that you spend a lot of time with people of various disabilities and many of you would find the comment funny. It's a bit like what Steady Eddie finds funny. Or the kinds of jokes that USA citizens of African descent find funny but no white person would get away with telling.
The most offensive revolting jokes I know - come from paramedics, the ones who have to scrape up humans off the road and bring them back for attempted repair.
