We had an interesting trip to the dog park today, it was a real eye opener for us.
As you may all know, we have Tara, a Blue Great Dane. She is now 11 months old and is ~45kg. We came across another Great Dane, who was the same sex as Tara, the same age as Tara, but she was in a much poorer state.
We walked over to say hello to her owners, Tara leading the way. Initially this other Great Dane went aggressive when Tara went to say "hello", and Tara got out of there for a bit. The owners said tha their dog had a bad experience about 15 mnites previously, anyway Tara's curiosity was greater than her fear, and they were both soon playing nicely.
The other people commented on the size of Tara compared to their dog. Their dog was 17kg lighter than Tara, and had her ribs and spine very clearly showing. The dog looked emaciated. I found out through discussion with the owners about their feeding regime and I informed them that, although they were feeding the right food for their Dane they were not feeding enough for her age. This dog comes to the park once a week according to the owners, and I think I will go back with Tara in order to try and educate them.
From the agression side of things, I saw them force their dog to the ground when another dog came up and was being a bit too enthusiastic in introducing itself, and their dog snapped back. I dont think that was the right thing to do, their dog had no option to move and avoid the meeting or have some control with the other dog, therefore felt threatened and responded.
I suggested to them that they have a look on the net and that the internet was their friend regarding Great Danes. They hope that we meet again.
I felt very sorry for their dog and feel as though I didnt do enough! What do you think?
