Thankyou for the very informative post, i fully agree wit what your saying, i too am a barf/raw feeder, I've been in contact with Dr Billinghurts himself & have been given the thumbs up from him in regards to my home made raw diets that i make up. TBH i dont feed my dogs kibble or commercial dog foods or pet minces from supermarkets or petshops & i refuse to do so, if only people knew what parts of the animal are actually in pet grade mince, i've got a family friend that works in the pet food industry & alot of the pet grade mince is horse & even road kill is used in it. I only feed my SBT'S HC grade meats bought from local butcher. I have posted info here about red & white meats & other posts regarding commercial dog food, but unfortunately its fallen on deaf ears.
I have actually NEVER had a vet recommend dry food to me. If anything, they've advocated the opposite. Well, they have for Shepherd's anyway.
But then I've mostly lived in smaller country towns, so that may explain it.

Lately I've been wondering about feeding raw... but have no idea where to start. So using this product, you would just add raw meat?? How much meat do you add to it?
How long does it last you? The website says 1kg would last just over 10 days... so 15kg should last 150 days - around 5 months? Or have I got that wrong lol.

I asked the guy who walks his curly coat retrievers where I walk Frosty, and he buys 5kg of roo meat every week for them, and feeds them raw chicken wings and necks and carcasses - a selection not all of it... and includes mixed vegies as well. The dogs look energetic and healthy.
I feed Nutro Natural Choice for Frosty, and since I switched up from Advance (made by the same company - go figure), Frosty has not had the runs despite being exposed to all the other things I thought were triggers. It could be she's grown up and isn't getting stressed by me being out or changes in her environment anymore too, but I'll stick with the Nutro for the moment.
I also feed a home made casserole that I cook up with 1kg of whatever meat for humans seems value for money - and I'm guilty of buying it from the supermarket, where as I buy meat for me from the butcher.
Buying human grade meat could be a tad expensive (don't get me wrong, I'm not a cheapskate - just a uni student lol) ....where can you get bulk roo meat from?
I also use the Vet's All Natural, it's a great product. My boy loves the puppy mince but it's a little pricey so I mix it up with human grade mince, steamed veg and Royal Canin biccies. He also gets chicken wings most days.
My vet (who is a raw food advocate) also suggested to seal mince before serving so that it kills any worms. (So it's cooked on the outside but raw in the middle).

On the advice of the vet for Pretty, who is feeding a litter I feed purina puppy supercoat. As well I add as raw, beef, lamb, chicken, bullock liver, sardines (she hates them so swapped to my gel fish oil caps) puppy formula, raw egg and crushed nuked shell, natural yogurt, spinach (chopped ever finer) Raw meaty bones yet to get some pumpkin to mash in. She was a very picky eater. She loves Raw so I use that to tempt to the other stuff and it works well. She hogs it all down now. So would I if I was lactating for 6 gutses.
No idea where you get bulk roo meat from especially in WA. I think Curly Coat dad gets it from a local "rual pet meats" store, there are a couple of these in Adelaide - but I think the meat is "pet grade". One pet supplies place I go to has minced chicken carcass with no preservatives but I won't feed that because it includes the bones and we'd had a very bad experience with that with a previous dog, although I think we'd cooked it thinking it was minced chicken fillet.
I think I'd start by phoning a few butchers and asking them, if you want roo meat suitable for human consumption, they might be able to get bulk if you order it in but find out how much it is. I got beef stewing steak today for about $7 a kilo - I pity the poor farmers - but that particular supermarket frequently has meat for around the $5 /kg mark. Not chicken but beef, pork, lamb... Roo meat that I used to make spag bol with seems to have become very expensive in the last few years. I should check again, apparently the Russians have stopped buying the stuff.
I'd be scared to buy roo meat for pets. Like how can you be sure it isn't road kill. Unless you've had good rain recently and there are no roos on the roads?
