I have a 13 week old Flat-coated Retriever (Yogi) whom I've had for just one week. We have been walking him 15-20 mins (sometimes a little more) twice a day as per our vet's advice and he seemed to enjoy this. But yesterday he walked about 10-15 mins and just refused to walk any further. He kept sitting down, I would cajole him a little further but then he just stopped altogether. (He had been walking up & down a few flights of stairs before hand - can this hurt his hips??) I didn't want to force him and therefore have a bad experience with walkies (and with me) but Im wondering if this is just a phase he might be going through or if it could be something more serious? I realise he's probably a little frightened with all the new sights and sounds but I thought an energetic dog would be pulling the arm off me to walk! (BTW when he does walk he heels really well most of the time unless there is another dog or people ahead). Should I go back to just walking him a few minutes and work it up from there? Im worried that wont be enough exercise/stimulation for him and he'll bark his head off when we're not there!
Also when I walk him on my own he keeps stopping to look behind him like he's looking for someone, but when I walk him with my partner he doesn't do this! Is he just looking for his littermates or something?
