Was going to post this in Nattylou's thread: New Dog Attack Report - Fingers Pointed at APBT Again .. but kinda didn't wanna override it too much as I might be a bit off topic ...
Hey Pooch Lovers,
I won't go too deep into the 'breed' issue, but just wanted to say a couple of things. I'm gonna go a bit off track here .. a couple of days without sleep, but this is my 'relax' time .. bear with me ...
Yes I completely agree that the reporting, the story itself, the facts all make for a sensational story - true, remotely true, false .. who knows?. It's the media's job to sell papers, radio time, online presence etc etc .. they will always find a way of telling a story just within their code of ethics but with enough dramatic interpretation to make it a 'sellable' story. The fact for us though is: people believe the media, it's the only way they can learn of news without seeing it themselves. I guess the point I'm making here is that apart from some of the people on this forum and maybe a few other socially aware pooch owners that I know - every single person I talk to thinks APBT's are dangerous and have no place in society. You can ask the question why? 'Because they are always mauling people and attacking innocent young kids and want to kill them'. So where do they get that opinion - certainly not from 1st hand experience or intelligent research - but from the media.
Unfortunately for us, I don't believe your voices are loud enough at present to be heard by the rest of the population .. at least those whom have already made up their minds about APBT's or any other 'seemingly dangerous' dog breed. I'm sorry, but I think that is a fact .. society as a whole are a hard crowd to sway once opinions are made and minds determined. Particularly Aussies, we are notoriously one-minded on certain issues and bloody stubborn to boot! Point in fact - we are stubborn about our passion for the breeds of pooches we love (and rightly so)!
We are a gullible society though and we love our 'celebrities' in the spotlight and what they have to say. Has anyone 'news'worthy ever come out to speak on behalf of the APBT's and their owners? I can't think of a one .. I can't think of any worthwhile and socially moving argument defending the APBT's put forward in a public arena that has been reported in recent times. The media will follow the interest, the conflicting, the sensational ... but they never follow the 'pro' APBT argument because no one is out their telling it. As a consequence society only hear one story and the story posted is proof of the message we are hearing.
(please correct me if I have this wrong and I just haven't heard who's out there telling the story)
I love the concept of people power .. Power to the People as John Lennon said .. and I always listen to everyone's opinions - get out there and spread the message, love it .. think globally, act locally .. awesome and all that kinda thing! But without a bigger effort and a way of taking the argument to society in a way befitting the the 'new society' of today .. I kinda feel like the issue of the APBT debate has/continues to decidedly sway into the hands of the majority, if not swayed completely ..
I might get some questions out of this one .. let me have it, no dramas .. (he says through almost open eyes!!!).
Peace and pooch love to all breeds,
SH, Lola n Zep
