Im happy to admit whilst i new what a puppy mill was i honestly didnt think it happened in Australia, more the US or Uk but not here
It's heartbreaking stuff and it really does need to be exposed more. A gf of mine just bought a dog off the local trading paper.. 5 weeks later the lady she bought the dog off was on Today Tonight as an exposed puppy miller/breeder..
It all made sense, because within 3 days of getting the dog he was at the vet due to dehydration and gastro, she thought it was a coincidence (not knowing much) but when she saw the report she knew it was just standard..
Not only did she pay 500 for the dog, she then paid 400 for the vet bills (plus vac's etc) and now doesn't know for sure what her puppy 'really' is.. He's suppose to be a lab x kelpie but he's showing signs of ridge-back every time i see him.
If only either of us (her or i) had joined her before she bought the dog to see this, would of been a real eyeopener! As she honestly believed the ladies story about her dogs "accident" (that she was taking her to be sterilized as she wasn't having any more mistakes), made sure she went to the persons house (which ended up being a "friends" house the report said) and viewed the mother, but the father was "out for a run"..
It's disgusting people do this! I do not agree with BYB but understand occasionally accidents DO happen, and if it does then trying to give the dogs good homes is that persons priority.. But it astounds me people do it time and time again KNOWING how wrong it is..
Off topic, but you'll find lizards and snakes etc have to come from a petshop as there are no 'breeders' without shops attached due to keeping a lid on numbers etc.. (at least here in WA) even then i wouldn't recomend an 'actual' pet shop but a specialty reptile store..
