Hi, new dog owner here. I have a lot to learn and am loving it. But was wondering about my dog being on heat. She is a Bichon Frise and this is her first heat. She is a purebred and we will Breed her when she is older and when she is fully trained etc. It is all new to me, but hey, we have to start somewhere. Now I know how male dogs carry on when a dog is in heat but was wondering about the female. She started her cycle on 2/8/2009 and is still swollen. The vet told me about the swelling, then the bleeding and then the mating stage. It is also my understanding that in some dogs you dont notice the bleeding as they can be rather good at cleaning up themselves. She has been wearing some special undies on and off a few days ago but has had no real signs of bleeding as yet. We were preparing her to get use to them for when she does bleed as she is an inside dog. So it is now 14 says into her heat and no bleeding yet. Do they get frisky like a male or behave in a different matter? I know she smells differently to male dogs but will we notice any kind of smell? Are there any other changes?
We have a secure backyard with a 6ft colourbond fence and someone is with her so to take no chance of any dog jumping fence, otherwise she is indoors. Thanks everyone
