There are moments in sharing lives with dogs, that are truly sweet and make my heart sing. Yesterday was one of them. I guess i have raised my kids with dogs, and this first birthday demonstrated to me, how 'part of the family' all the dogs are. Firstly, my dogs got their own personal invitations to the party. It was signed off with the humans and their dogs names.
NB. The party was held at our house, as easier than my son's house which is small.
Each party guest, that i had never met, arrived saying things like 'this must be pohm?' or 'bernie' They knew of my dogs. Clearly they form enough of a part of my son and daughter in laws conversations, that guests knew a shepherd n rottie would be there. That was nice i thought, it made me smile.
Each guest was greeted, sniffed over for treats, and put into the party room by bernie a herding dog, trapped at a kids party! Nirvana for bernie.
Pohm took pride of place by birthday boy. Coz he was dropping all sorts of food from the high chair down on the floor. Pohm, the perfect waitress, would ensure that any mess these babies made, she'd clean up immediately, dont want anyone tripping up on the inside of his party pies my grandson was shaking to death over the room. Stone floors, 2 dogs, not a problem.
The babies were crawling, the unsteady on feet 1yr olds, meandering, and slowly slowly, bernie would approach the walking toddler, they grab a handful of his fur, and he was leading them back into the room.
And what i noticed, is he was far more gentle with the stranger babes, than he is with my grandson, who now knows, to tuck his head in, when they knock him over lol
Each of the toddlers got to give bernie and pohm a party pie. with them doing "gently" command. Proud again.
Down stays for duration of present opening 100%- through cheering, clapping, squeels of delighted kids. proud again
Put the wrapping paper in the bin 100% for each pressie by bernie
Then be put outside, whilst kids running loose everywhere part.
Then Bernie going "OFF" high whining pitch barking/howling, spinning on spot. 'what's that lassy?' moment you get with dogs. And sure enough, one of the little tuckers, has crawled half way through the dog door, and is stuck, with pohm washing the kids face on one side, and kicking torso visable on my side of the door LMAO. My house is not kid proof, just dog proof.
Then my dogs got cuddled, bitten, stroked/poked under supervision, by babies for a bit before they all went home. After they left, bernie cried, he'd had a lovely party! herding them down the hall, incessantly for 2hrs of 'duty'. A job - that's all a shepherd wants after all. He loved that self appointed party job!
And when all guests left, and a very tired baby was put in his cot for a late arvo nap, Pohm's babysitting task complete, she was under that cot and snoring in seconds. Kids huh, exhausting.
Today, im dog happy. They are great, i love me to bits.
Tomorrow, one of them will of put half a tree in my laundry through the dog door or something, but that's tomorrow. Today im pround.
