Because Greyhound owners and trainers have an endless numbers of "offcasts" not suitable for racing and making money. Many are only 18 months old or younger.
Gap has a waiting list for ex racing Greys in need, or for those who dont make the grade.
Greyhound owners and trainers are not prepared to wait. It is much cheaper to surrender them to the local pound for $37.50 than pay a vet to euthenase them, let alone spend the time needed to rehome them.
They are a disposable commodity.
Only a small number of Greyhounds make the grade in racing so to speak.
Even after a great racing carrer and making a lot of money for the owners they are still dumped in shelters and pounds.
We have a racing track here in the Hawkesbury. You would think GAP would get involved as there are so many who need help, but no.
In short they are simply not doing enough. And this is coming from an org who is flooded with finances from the racing industry.
Local rescuers with no finances what so ever, but with a great empathy and passion for this breed are these dogs only lifeline in this area.
I hear you, None of this makes sense...
