So I've just done a load of research and math work in figuring out how Black Hawk (what I'd like to feed Koda) compares to Supercoat (What I am feeding him).
I finally figured out how to weigh him without going to the vet... our only scales are totally up the creek! He weighs 24kg... Which proves to me (for those who saw my thread asking about his weight) that he is too skinny, so I will be feeding him more now. He used to be 30kg at one point, although he might have been a bit chubby then...
I've based all my calculations off the recommended feed amounts for Koda's ideal weight. He is currently getting 3.5 cups of food per day, but while he's still on supercoat I'm going to up it to 4 or 4.5 cups per day so he gains a bit more weight.
Black Hawk -
1 cup = 126g
According to the website, Koda should have 250 - 300g per day, so that is 2 to 2.5 cups per day.
Average cost of $100 per 20kg, which splits up to $5 per 1kg.
So adding it up, I would get 80 servings of 250g out of a 20kg bag, which is 80 servings per $100.
I would get 66 servings of 300g out of a 20kg bag, which is 66 servings per $100.
1 cup = 120g
According to the back of the packet, Koda should have 450 -500g per day, so that is 4 to 4.5 cups per day.
Average cost of $50 per 18kg bag, which splits up to $2.78 per 1kg.
So adding it up, I would get 40 servings of 450g out of an 18kg bag. Which is 80 servings per $100 (same as Black Hawk)
I would get 36 servings of 500g out of an 18kg bag. Which is 72 servings per $100.
I know of another male Australian Shepherd who is a similar size to Koda (a bit smaller though) and he only gets 2 cups of food per day!!
So If the feeding guides are correct, then Koda could potentially be fine with only 2 cups of food per day which works out no more expensive than Supercoat! He hasn't had meaty bones for a while either, but I'm happy to feed them once or twice a week as well.
I'm willing to give it a go at least, but I figured I'd ask to see if anyone has any experience with how accurate the guides are, cause I really have no idea..
Gosh this post is long.... I appreciate it if you've made it to the end
