Well, its happened. I arrived home this morning from doing some banking etc and found all my chickens, all seven of them, dead in their pen.
I have little doubt that the culprit was Serena as she has tried to get into the pen in the past.
The enclosure is made of chicken wire attached to star pickets. Serena found a week spot and managed to create a hole big enough for her to squeeze through.
Must have been a terrifying end to their lives and I am saddened as I raised all my chickens as one day olds. Also, no more eggs for the time being at least. It disheartening that I have to start all over again if I chose to re-stock.
I have a feeling that now she has succeeded in sating her natural instincts that she would not hesitate to do so again some time in the future. My plan is to fortify the existing coop structure and close off any potential weak spots and then re-stock over spring.
