Just in case you wanted to get to the source of most of my training words of wisdom - this is where most of it comes from.
Susan Garrett - she's a world champion agility dog and people trainer - and an animal behaviour scientist
She's running her promo videos for Recallers at the moment, and in a week or so she will open up registrations for her online course.
Breaking the Dog Training Rules
PPS first promo video - she did say share with all your friends...
If past years are anything to go by - there will be one live coaching call a month that you can submit questions for ahead of time - and then when the live call is over, the tape of that is posted a couple of days later so you can watch and learn ahead of time.
The most recent live calls have been done with youtube. They're usually 6:30pm Toronto time which works out around 8am or 9 am Australian Eastern time. Which is better than 2 in the morning for the Swiss students.
There's about 35 or so recaller games - for relationship building.
It includes the foundation games - its yer choice, collar grab and crate games (she posts a fair bit of this but she really wants you to get the dvd so you don't have to repeat yourself.
There's heaps of info on what to do when things go wrong and demo videos for each game / drill. Some you do by yourself, some you do with other people. There's usually minimum equipment required - no fancy agility stuff.
If you do the reinforcement zone stuff - you get some really fancy heelwork... must make the video...
essentially you're learning how to train your dog. the main aim is a brilliant recall - the sort that will stop your dog chasing a rabbit into the path of an on coming truck.
I can't say my recall is perfect yet, but I haven't followed all the exercises properly yet (first 18 games or about four weeks mean no off lead self helping to reinforcement ie no off lead foraging at the park). But my recall and dog training is So much better than before I started. I no longer have to go up the stairs to the football club balcony to put my dog on lead so I can go home...
I still haven't figured out how to stop her from licking my brother with adoration...
It's not free. I'm in the ICPeeps version - which means I get access for a full year and coaching calls for a full year...
Even if you don't fork out - you can still learn quite a bit from the promo videos and from SG's blog.
