We adopted a new puppy 3 weeks ago, she is a mixed breed possibly staffy, possibly mastiff but she is very small and very slim. We wonderd if she also had some whippet in her,, we only say this as she is thin and her ribs are very visible.
She is a rescue dog, she was dumped with two other puppies at 4 weeks old. When we picked her up from the foster home she was very underweight. She weighed 3kg, all of her ribs were very visible as was her hips. The next day we took her to her local vets, the same vets who look after our other dog (a 15month old red heeler x). I was pretty disappointed with the vet, didnt see our regular vet but had one of the partners of the surgery, she didnt a very brief check up. She didnt feel her stomach, didnt take her temperature, did listed to her chest and lungs, did look at her teeth. I had to ask about her weight and if there is anything to do about it, she just suggested feeding her small amounts 5 times a day and then gave me samples of puppy food that they sell and then tried to get me to sign up to a 560 buck program that includes food and vaccines for 12 months. So the check up I asked for sended up being a sales pitch and I left with a handul of leaflets on products the vet sells. Wasnt impressed at all, time to change vet.
We also worked out that the resuce group she came from seem a little dodgy, even though the foster carer did a good training and socialisation job they didnt tell us how aggressive she is with other dogs around food. They also dont appear to have worked her appropriately, they were worming her monthly opposed to what you should do with puppys which is worm every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old, then months till 12 months. They also didnt tell us when her vaccination was carried out, it took 20 odd emails until I finally got a response. So we spoke to our regular vet (not the partner) who is a more junior vet but seems alot more thorough and genuine. She advised give her the worming tablet every two weeks for 3 doses then monthly.
Anyway I digress.
So later that day she developed diarrhea, we thought it was from the gradual change of food we were doing and her new surroundings. We were keeping her well hydrated with coconut water/coconut water ice cubes. We fed her chicken and rice, then the bloody diarrhea started, her abdomen was also very swollen and she was constantly hungry. I decided to give her a worming tablet, she then passed a large amount of round worms, a few days later she had solid poo and her abdo was less distended. In one week she had put on a kilogram and lost a huge amount of huge worms.
Now she appears to be growing, she is getting taller but her ribs almost look more obvious, she is now growing more loose skin which she didnt have when we got her.
We are feeding her Artemis fresh food puppy medium/large breed puppy food Medium Large Breed Puppy - Artemis Pet Food Australia she is getting 260 g divided over 4-5 feeds with Nutrigel nutrigel mixed in. We also give her extras like a bit of chicken or some of the 4legs chicken balls with some of her meal times.
She is also getting dried lamb lung and home made chicken jerky for training.
We thought about giving her pumpkin and occasionally pasta to provide some more carbs in her diet.
Any suggestions, any thoughts, any advice?
