bummer. I hope she gets better or what ever it is - can be found and fixed.
I just got off the phone to mum again.. she went downhill very quickly - shaking, drooling, unable to move, wouldn't eat or drink and cant bark/make noises. Mum rushed her back to the vet and they found a spot in her lip that looks like a tick could've been attached.. they are giving her a big tick bath at the moment and taking blood tests to see if they can find any tick poision (venom?) in her blood. Apparently she was pretty bad and might be past the point of no return but at least she is in the best place possible and they are doing everything they can for her. Fingers crossed she pulls through.
One of the first signs a dog has a tick - is the dog has a hard time barking...
Dammit - fancy shaving the entire dog only to find the bloody tick was probably inside the lip or ear or bum folds or paw or some other invisible spot.
I also hate when they get the diagnosis right the first time then discount it because...
They had her shaved last week just so she could handle the heat stress of summer (she has always struggled) so thankfully it wasn't just because they thought she had a tick.
Mum was only talking to the physio and vet last month and they both suggested not treating her for ticks as they didn't think her body could handle all the extra 'chemicals' that were in the protection as her kidneys and liver could still be compromised from what happened a few months back. Plus in 10 years she has never been given tick treatment and never had a tick. Just typical!!
They are still not sure that it is a tick but they want to check first before assuming that it is what she had before.
Let's just hope that she can cheat death one more time
Results are in... It's NOT a tick I was sorta hoping it was because then at least they know what treatment avenue to take.
The vet thinks it's the same nervous/immune thing as last time. He has sent bloods to Brisbane and will get the results tomorrow.. Not sure what they're looking for in the bloods because from memory.. Nothing showed up in the bloods last time. Will let you all know when I hear something tomorrow. Bugger bugger bugger!!
Ok so where things are this morning... She is still exactly the same and is being kept at the vets on a drip. Blood tests came back all clear so didn't give any indication on what was wrong. Vet believes it is the same mystery illness as last time but is hoping that it could still be a tick (unlikely). She has been given tick serum just in case so we will just play the waiting game now.
To make things worse, mum and dad are due to go to New Zealand next Wednesday and they cannot claim a single cent of Roxy's vet bills back through insurance as they claimed all they possibly could last time she got sick...
If she was a human, I'd be asking for an MRI - to check her spine and spinal cord are not impaired, squished or something.
tempting to check her in as another dog...
blood tests would show virus or other immune response but you have to order the right blood test...
I've got no idea - I hope the vets are doing better.
They did a MRI last time she was sick and nothing showed up.. They've done a few blood tests this time too and nothing. Apparently the vet is calling other vets and universities all over Australia to see if they have any idea where to go from here.
Mum is taking her home tonight to lift her spirits.. it seemed to work last time Good news is that its just her back end that is paralyzed this time.. she can still lift her front paws to 'shake' but just cant stand/put weight on them, she can still lift her head too.. lets just hope she doesnt get any worse.
