How fab, that its down in the teens temperature wise. Longer harder walks can be taken. We did our first long walk for a few hours of australia's walking season. Training club was back in action, having been cancelled due to weather for weeks and weeks. And most of us who have dogs that dont do heat, have had to walk them very early or late.
So new found freedom, i loaded the ute with mine, and we took off. The bush fires have dessimated our walk. Its black everywhere. Whilst i was sadened by this, i got to see from a dogs POV that its great!
All 3 loved the smell of the blackened charcoal. For different reasons. Pohm could not stop rolling around in it. Very happy indeed when her coat is covered in er perfumes, and as perfumes go, charcoal is one of the least offensive ones she likes. Personal choice n all that. So she walked sedately by my side, stopping frequently to roll again. She had rottie colourings at start of walk, totally black at the end.
Bernie realised immediately, with no undergrowth cracking noises, he could get a LOT closer to prey before the chase and boy was he happy to be chasing easily through wood land, cleared of scrub. Also he could see so much more rabbits! Kept him busy for entire duration of walk, chasing, giving it his best to catch one, unsuccessful hunter this day, but its the chase that counts for him. He'll kill in one bite, so im good with that should he catch them. He generally has to give them to pohm for a scooby snack, as he goes all vegetarian once the kill has occured, and spits it, to chase the next.
Brian was a mixture of Bernie chasing, and rolling with pohm. He's not into chasing rabbits, but would follow bernie off a cliff, so very busy and able to really speed, without overheating. So i could relax. Whiilst i got brian toward the end of winter, i was not letting him off leash back then. So this was his first true off leash bush walk.
2 weeks ago the fire was, and regeneration already underway
We met a american staffie looking bitch, who was wandering alone in the forest. She joined us for a hour, at a watering hole for a swim and a drink. Brian kept walking under water? Kinda freaked me out? why is he not swimming to catch her? Several times he went under water. This dog is seriously freaky. Pohm will swim under water also occasionally, if she's fishing. Whereas Brian is just 'under water' coz he's walked out of his depth. Swims to surface easily enough though, go figure?
Im looking forward to winter, and bush walking regularly. I came home, dirty, covered in slobber, with 3 very happy tired dogs. Put the dogs in the lake for their 'bath', and brought them out once i could see Brian was a ginger, and not tortoiseshell coloured with soot, and pohm's eyebrows and muzzle markings were back, and no longer jet black all over.
We all ate too much, then conked out early for bed. Happy days!
Once, ive bush walked once this season. And today, i wake up and make my way to the dog beds. They have my boots ready for me and are overly excited, clearly up for another today. Whereas im all aches, pains and 20yrs older feeling! Its great to get out with my dogs. Makes my heart sing.
Are others dogs enjoying the relatively cooler climate?
