just a quick update on progress with Serena the wonder dog. I am very stoked to say that she has migrated from her 'safe' spot to another 'safe' spot in the living room where we all hang out. She sleeps there on an old comfy sleeping bag. She will love camping one day.
The other thing, I have noticed that she is increasingly becoming less scared of the kids. The other night I was giving all three terrors a bath and Serena came in looking for me and I guess to investigate what was going on. She even came into my youngest's room whilst I was putting him into her PJs. so that made me happy too. Also, lastly, that small bare patch of hair on her tail is slowly filling in with new fur.
anyway, as ever, thanks for reading and for all your help!
woohoo-dancing-banana-smiley-emoticon.gif Looooove this update !
Fantastic news ! Have a smile on all 4 of my cheeks !
Keep up your good work - see - she is coming around ! It takes time to build up trust - she is just one - and you and your family are soooo many - including those scary 'midgets' !
That's really great news Adrian.
Keep up the great work!
If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them. ~Phil Pastoret
her foray into her new spot has been a little too premature I think. She follows me back in to the study and then makes herself at home in her 'old' safe spot and nothing I say will make her budge. I have tried gently tugging her out with the lead but she is steadfast and is quite strong so I don't want to drag her out. To be honest, I'm thinking that if she feels safe there and the second spot is too much for her, then maybe I pushed a little too early. I know she is isolating herself a little but I can't think of what else to do. Any advice or ideas?
It's like a dance.
Two steps forward, two steps back, three steps sideways, one step forward... and round you go.
I think she did really well to spend a bit of time in safe spot number 2 for a short time... hopefully you had a couple of treats or an ear rub ready by way of reward and encouragement?
My dog was under the desk under the keyboard I'm typing on but I think she's gone back to the couch now. She really doesn't like it if I put a foot up on her under desk bed...
But she doesn't like being far away either.

Her behaviour is perfectly natural and normal - as far as I am concerned. Nothing to worry about !
That is a great thread and some of it certainly makes sense. Its funny, and it should have been obvious to me, that Serena knows that the study area is firstly, quiet, and secondly, where I hang out the most these days when I am studying. I think she knows that I will turn up in the study some time or another. To be honest, if she is happy and relaxed sleeping and hanging out there, then who am I to spoil her comfort.
On another note, I thought I would try feeding Serena her brekky and dinner by hand as a way to bond more. So far so good. If she is concentrating on her food, she doesn't seem to mind any of my kids being in the vicinity. I am hoping that she will come to associate hand feeding with yummy food and the family being around. Don't know if it will work but I'll try - im no expert!
I finally recieved Serena's pedigree papers in the mail yesterday. I was surprised to see that Serena is actually two years older than I thought she was. I was told initially that Serena was six years old. But her papers say she was born March 2006 which, of course, makes her eight years old. Should it surprise me actually? Her real age doesn't bother me, although it does explain her love of sleep . I just wish people would be up front and honest. anyway, just thought I would share
