Yesterday we ran out of cat food so went to a (very popular) pet store chain to pick some up.. They were out of the BARF that we usually feed so I just bought a roll of pre-mixed VAN for him.
We got home and my partner cut off a bit and gave it to the cat, he told me that it really stunk and I (stupidly) just told him that 'kangaroo mince does stink a fair bit'. Then a few minutes later I walked past the cat (who was still just staring at his food) and the smell was absolutely revolting.. I checked the use-by date and it was for back in JULY!!! We're in October now!
We took it back to the pet store and they refunded it for me, they only had 1 more roll left in stock, which was also out of date, so I'd hate to think how many seriously out of date rolls of 'fresh' food they had sold... What really worried me was that it was 'kitten' food, and I really don't think you could get away with feeding food that has been out of date for 3 months to a young kitten without some sort of issues.
They refunded my money for the roll but made me pay for the replacement food I bought (I've worked in retail before and was always under the impression that if you gave somebody something that was 3 months out of date, you refunded and replaced for free ) So lesson learnt here.. always check the date before you buy 'fresh' food!
