As I walked across the square in front of the library today, a dog fight broke out right in front of me. Looked like the instigator had managed to pull the leash out of his owners hand and went straight for a dog that was sitting with his owner at a bench. He obviously made a bit of a miscalculation because even though he was the bigger dog, the other dog won as far as determination goes. The attacker let go as soon as his owner grabbed him by the collar, but the dog he attacked would not let go of his ear.
His owner was pulling his collar to no avail as I and another bystander watched on, wondering what to do.
Then I remembered the advice I read here and told him "Grab his hind legs! Lift his hind legs off the ground!" He finally understood what I was saying and lifted his dog's backside up and he immediately let go of the other dog.
That was the first time I had ever seen this put into practice and it sure worked!
Both dogs were fine and both owners apologised to eachother.
