This is a bit of a rant - I seriously need to vent. I've mentioned before how useless my local council is when it comes to dog control. I've just had another incident, and have basically been told yet again that nothing can be done.
I got home from work the other night at about 6.30pm to find a guy standing at my fence - not 2 paces away. My dogs were on the other side doing their damndest to protect their property. Sal's got the heart of a lion, but Abe's still a baby and is quite fearful so I worry that at this stage of his development he could easily be traumatised by a scary incident. The guy was holding a golf club, and had 2 unleashed pitties (entire adult males) with him - and he was stirring them up and encouraging aggression towards my dogs. I got out of the car (I have my 16yr old son with me) and called out "are you right mate?". He replied "just taking the boys for a walk". We stood there for a minute til I said that I couldn't open the gate to put my car away until his dogs had gone, and he walked off.
I was rattled, as my house was broken into last year, my car also stolen. Yards with dogs in this town have been the safest, and now I worry that the crims are going to start bringing 'tough' dogs with them to take care of our dogs while they take care of our property. I called the police, who took my report and gave it a job number, which was all I really hoped for. They were as helpful as they could be in the circumstances. The dog control officer for council was another matter. He didn't want to know. Said to me "what do you want me to do about it?" Fantastic. How about your job? Thing is, and this is the bit that really riles me - it's not a dog issue, it's a race issue. We have an Aboriginal mission here in town, the dogs in question are 'mish dogs', and the powers that be are too scared to do anything about it. Instead, they enforce the dog laws for white folk, and only then if you give them the name and address of the offender. He will pick up dogs wandering in the main street only if he knows them to be not mish dogs. The mish dogs have the run of our town and I am sick to death of there being 2 sets of rules.
I'm ready to throw my hands in the air, I just don't know what else to do, but I am worried something seriously ugly will happen - these dogs have already attacked one leashed dog, and have matured considerably since then. Since I did my shoulder, I can't walk 2 leashed dogs, and because I have total voice control over Sal and she heels beautifully, I walk her unleashed while Abe is on leash. If I make too much noise about these other dogs I can see that I'll be the one to end up with the fine.
Needless to say my dogs will be locked in the house when I am out after dark from now on...
