Last Friday (5 days ago) I had Pepper, my almost 9 month old Lab spayed. She has a had a slow recovery, no complications (as far as i know) i think all down to been babied all her life (my fault) and being a huge sook.
The first day she was groggy from the anesthetic and could move around and was fine.
The next day she was quite the same however very sooky and would walk two steps them have a big panic attack and sit down and hunch over.. she then was panting and breathing fast all afternoon I took her to two vets (me being so paranoid) the first vet i got an elizabethan collar (they didnt give me one when leaving) and some pain meds.I took her home and she got alot more workerd up.. i took her to another local vet to get her checked they said she is fine, wound looks good she is just distressed about what is going on.
When i got home she started the breathing heavy and panting, i looked and she had done a wee, it made me think it is hurting her to go to the toilet, so whenever she started the panting i would take her outside and after about 10 minutes of the heathy breathing and panting she would go to the toilet.
From day 1 of coming home from surgery she was eating and drinking which was a great sign, but now it is day 5 and she is still so down and upset. I suffer from anxiety and i have babied her way too much where sometimes i think it is because of me doing that she is such a little baby. also with my anxiety i have been so nasty to everyone around me due to being so worried about my pup. she gets so distressed with her collar on, she works herself up to the point where i cannot calm her down. when you take her E Collar off she calms down a little bit but still wimpers and winges and won't walk, when she goes to the toilet she will sprint around the whole yard in a fit, but apart from that isnt interested in walking. when i have her collar off i give her toys to play with and shes happy to sit and play with them and every now and then she wil lgo to lick her wound and i will move her head away .. then at bedtime i put it back on and she whinges all night. it seems that when my boyfriend comes and looks after her while i am at work she is fine and sleeps perfectly.
last night she got very worked up with the ecollar and my mum being my mum said oh ill put some savlon on it, that will help, i told her NO DONT PUT ANYTHING ON IT, anyway i come home from my indoor netball game and mum has put savlon on her wound, she ws very calm and happy t play with toys and less whingy. i think her stitches are at the irritating stage where they are healing and its very itchy.
she can get her stitches out on wednesday and i think it will be much better then! the vet just seemed to think because she cant access and scratch where it is itchy and she is getting very worked up. but i guess me being anxious me is worried sick.
So basically if anyone could share any experiences on longer recovering pups, or any information and advice would be appreciated so much! I have just heard everyone around me saying their dogs recovered within 2 days of surgery so it is worrying, after 3 vet visits tey have clarified everything is fine but still nice to hear others personal experience.
Thanks In Advance
