I would like to get some general advice if I can.
I have 3 young children (5, 4 & 9mths) and hubby & I are keen on getting a dog.
We are currently dog-sitting an 18-mth lab x sharpei male dog named Butch. He's a lovely boy, and we've had him for just over 24 hrs. He usually lives with a 2yr female beagle, and a family of 4, however is no longer wanted by his current owners.
I am trialling him for the weekend only, to see how it goes. That being said, he is a nice dog, but VERY unsettled. He is somewhat timid, and is very wary if you have something in your hand (not saying he was abused, highly doubt it, but you never know). He has not been socialised very well, but when we took him for walks (2 small walks today) he seemed to enjoy himself. BUT, being that he is somewhat jumpy, it concerns me about how he may react if the kids make sudden loud noises etc. (Plus that Sharpeis can be a dominant & headstrong breed).
ALTERNATIVELY, we are considering buying a purebred golden retriever from a reputable breeder (to minimise risk of hip / elbow / eye / heart issues), and I am wondering which would be the "safer" option for my children.
I understand that regardless of the age / size / experience / training of a dog that the children need constant supervision when with a dog, but would it be erring on the side of caution by going for the new puppy?
I don't know what will happen with Butch if we don't take him, but I can't use that as my decision base. The safety of my children must be paramount obviously.
So, ultimately, my question is this: what would you do in this situation, and why?
Thanks in advance
