My knee brace - had strong support down the sides (I did tear the ligaments at the sides, and then above and below - not to tight or you cut the circulation but you want to reduce the flexibility a bit and provide support or reduced stretch - just below and above the knee cap.
So at a guess - I'd put a couple of bits of tape along the leg either side of the joint but not behind or in front, and then a bit around the leg just above and below, leaving a gap behind and in front. I'd think about taping over the top of the kneecap - but all the straps I've ever had leave a hole right over the knee cap.
This one suggests taping above and below and then cross strapping - but note - leaves a space over the actual knee cap.

I've also found that a simple strap just under the knee cap - helps with patella problems and IT band (side quad thigh muscle).
Note - I'm not a vet. And please make sure you don't cut the circulation ie doesn't need to be really tight.
