Today I had a very fortunate escape with Brutus. I was walking him with the other three dogs this afternoon when the metal clip of his lead just fell apart. He wasn't pulling or doing anything to put strain on the lead. He got about 5-10m away from me (towards a truck) before he responded to my frantic calls. Brutus is a rescue dog and still a compulsive car/ bike chaser at times even though he is less worked up than he was when I got him 4 years ago. I am just so lucky he came back to me and the lead didn't break a few seconds later.
He was on a woven lead that he had with him from the shelter. It belonged to the old lady who originally owned him (he went to the shelter when she died) - so I am guessing it was 7-8 years old. Can anyone recommend a quality lead, or should they all be replaced every 5 years or so? We live about 2km from the coast so maybe the salt in the air rusts the metal parts quicker than they normally would.
So - moral of the story for me is to keep the dogs under control as though they were not on a lead when out walking and not to give up on training because it does save dog's lives.
