Interesting to contemplate how he found the hospital, a dog's sense of smell is pretty amazing. He may have tracked him by the guy's scent but maybe the wife had visited the hospital and he tracked the hospital smell on her. I imagine a hospital would have a pretty distinctive smell for a doggy nose, even from kilometres away. I know my dog's always give me (and the ute) a good old nose going over when I return from somewhere without them (especially embarrassing when I return from a "good" friend's place and they stick their nose right in my crotch....). They can also be lying down inside a car or back of the ute with no vision of what's outside and suddenly jump up when we go past somewhere they know - a car park where we park for a walk, or just before the roundabout leading to my house, or a driveway of an old friend's place (even years after I last visited there). Nose plus memory is incredible.
They also use smell to help work out what I am about to do next. Sunscreen means we are going to the beach (confirmed when I pick up a hat), so time to get excited, perfume means I'm off to work, so no reaction. No secrets from these guys.
Sean, thank you for this story !
Yes, we as owners really underestimate what our pups can really do with their sense of smell and eyesight and memory.
A long time ago - sounds like a children's story - but growing up we had a cattle x - she was always looking after us kids - followed us everywhere. Of course the bush telegraph in those days - mum sort of knew where we were all - or so she thought!
Well - we all arrived home safe and well !
It wasn't until this pup got older and had what I know now to be dementia - that mum really found out where we actually went on our travels !!!
Well wasn't that fun explaining all that !!
My old Ridgeback would get all excited after 5 hours in the car as we turned of the highway to visit my parents. Still a good 10 minutes from the actuall destination...but he knew dam well where we where going. Amazed me every time he did it.
Theres no way he recognised the turn off. Maybe it was my sense of feeling like i was 'back home' that he picked up on. When we got to our old street he would go nuts !!
Was really cool to watch him.....
LOL Troppo.....i get sniffed out big time everyday too. Like a jealous wife sniffing a cheating husband for perfume....... What dogs have you been patting today dad ?????
