We are a new dog family and have a male golden lab retriever puppy, now 18 weeks old. He is a very excitable thing, jumping up lots and also quite nippy, often using his teeth. We live on 5 acres in North NSW where there are snakes, ticks and all sorts of things. We're wanting to keep our new family member safe. Our property is not dog proof - the fence is just strings of wire.
Before puppy came to live with us we had a dog trainer come advise us on how to prepare for it. Following her advice we fenced in about 120 cms high a large portion of our verandah and down a grassy area.
As puppy is growing he is jumping over that fence, quite easily now. He does not stay on our property and goes to visit neighbours, who also have young children.
We don't want him nipping others (or us) and want to keep him safe in his area, also away from snakes and things.
It is not straight forward to simply build a higher fence.
I'm wondering about putting in two poles with a cable, say 15 metres apart, and using a leash around the cable so he can travel back and forth, putting it near shade and water.
Open to suggestions and advice, thanks
