I've never seen one before!!
Thanks for all the Birthday Wishes - he went rabbit chasing as well so had a good day!!
Yes, Borzoi he is. If you google them you'll see lots of different colours.
They used to be known as Russian Wolfhound. The breed is about 900 years old, and originated when Middle Eastern hounds (Saluki/Afghan types) were taken into Russia for hunting but couldn't survive the weather... They bred them with the large local sheepdog types (ancestors of the Caucasian Ovcharka) and selectively bred them into large, powerful but very very elegant hounds. They were kept by the Tsars and Royalty. When the Russian revolution occurred, they were largely exterminated as they were seen as a symbol of Imperialism. But the breed was restored from hidden kennels and remains today....
Sorry for the length, but a little history is often interesting!!
They are amazing dogs to live with, heartstoppingly beautiful and heartmeltingly lovable. Their biggest problem is that they re addictive and you can't stop at one....
He is just gorgeous, and from his photo he seems like a very regal gentleman.
And what an interesting history!
Happy Birthday Boris and hope you had a great day. Love Borzois....such elegant dogs.
The more people I meet, the more I like my dogs.
