I have been the laziest dog trainer on the planet with our pup pohm. In fact, Bernie has trained her all she knows probably. We did some clicker training, but i got bored of that. I find Pohm very dull to train. She's mrs plod. Not a high octane dog at all, by any stretch of the imagination.
Yesterday, i watched my daughter in law feed the pup. She commanded sit, repeatedly, and the pup sat repeatedly, but as she took so long to mark/reward the correct behaviour, pup would get up again. And so daughter in law was getting cross that pup wouldnt sit. I so wanted to interfere. But who am i to train/talk, when ive done nothing with Pohm myself.
So yesterday, i started basic training 101 with her and my new climbers bag for speed to treat delivery. God she's so slow! I had roast pork cubes for reward in a food obsessed dog. And she sat, 100% of time. Just how long does it take? ages it seems. She acts like some old lady all the time. Takes ages to get up and down.
This type of training is killing me. I hate it. So wanted to speed us up a little, or i'll fall into a coma waiting for one of her sunday sits zzzzzzz
Pohm is great at being ball obsessed, Bernie has taught her that too.
She's fast, has a great nose. Can find anything bernie takes too long to discover on his hunt, she'll get there first.
Can people suggest some exercises/activities/training that will speed my dog up?
She has come/sit/fetch/on your bed/out/gently so far.
Wont drop (probably knows its a long way down and then would have to get up again- more energy)
I have access to a lake. Are there any water exercises people know? She loves to swim. And its good for her coat. Id be keen to do some water training, as she's driven at this point. And i need to see drive to perk my interest up. Obviously i can train without it, but i lose interest fast if the dog is slow, dull, walking pace everywhere.
She's a little on the plump size. And gets serious amounts of exercise daily.
Rabbits have gone somewhere, so no hunting at moment. Another fast activity of hers, chasing rabbits.
Strengths/assets for training: food orientated, access to lake, access to other dogs, pup of 12 weeks visits 3 days a week to be babysat by her. Will fetch a ball only. Doesnt like other objects in mouth such as frisbee yet.
Weaknesses: lazy, sun worshiping rug most of time, food obsessed, top dog around here for anything you can eat, beta dog for anything you can throw.
I live rurally, no access to dog training classes. Loads of access to bush land though.
all suggestion welcome.
