Hi there - I've never written on a forum before so excuse me if I don't do things quite right. I'm not sure if I should be writing my questions here either so again apologies if I'm not in the right place but wasn't sure where to write this.
I have a female 2 year old Bishon x Poodle (Lucy) that I've had since a puppy and she is having so many problems poor thing. Prior to getting Lucy I had two other dogs and cats that all lived till they were around 17 years of age with minimal vet visits other than regular injections etc. Since getting Lucy, its been constant visits back and forth. Since she was a couple of months old, in fact almost when we first got her, she's had a skin irritation / allergy. We've been to the vets and tried numerous treatments, washes, creams, diets, elimination of certain foods etc and nothing has made any significant difference. The only thing that seems to help is for her to be given prednisolone tablets and I know that her having these long term is not a good thing. surely there has to be something out there that is natural or homeopathic that would help and I am hoping that someone out there has tried alternative medicines that are working. She licks herself and nibbles at her fur so that her skin is raw. She knows she shouldn't be doing it and the minute she is missing you know that she's gone somewhere to nibble in secret!
The 2nd problem is that at around 20 months of age Lucy had a sore eye. When we took her to the vet they said she had a formed cataract in one eye and a small start of one in the other. It was suggested that she have cataract surgery just to the one eye. At that time the other eye had a start of a cataract but the specialist said they felt it wasn't advanced enough to operate on both. Also that it might take months, years or maybe never to develop further in the other eye. We had the cataract surgery to one eye in February and all went well. Last week she had a problem with her other eye and now I've been told that the cataract has developed and she needs surgery or be blind and have prednefrin forte drops for the rest of her life in the other eye that wasn't operated on. Can she live a healthy life with only one eye? It was a real struggle to find the money for her first eye and now she needs surgery again. I just don't know what to do?
