    Default Afraid of the hose

    hey all

My little Rottie Tank is going well and looking quite healthy. He is quite confident and after his last vaccination today i am looking forward to taking him for walks. He is now 3 and a half months. I have noticed lately that he is very afraid of the hose.

We have always used a hose around him and wash his keenel and so on. We have never used to hose in order to discipline him or scare him.

What are some things i can do in order to help him get over his fear of the hose?

My dog is very scared of the hose and so was my old dog. I don't really worry about it. I would love to have a dog who plays under the hose or sprinkler, but I've accepted that is unlikely to ever happen. You can do some exercises to try get him over his negative association to the hose, like give yummy treats close to the hose - switched off at first, then with the hose on a trickle, and so on. But I decided not to really bother. I can't see any real need for my dog to like the hose. I hope that in time she will stop running off to hide when I switch it on. So I do occasionally throw a ball for her while I'm holding the hose and stuff, but that's as far as I go.

Yeah i guess its not a huge problem. My last dog used to love it and i used to call him over and wash him using the hose, he wouldnt even flinch. He loved it lol

My two adore the hose and it is a pain in the ass! Everything we do that involves a hose the dogs are all up in there. Bella thinks its just there to drink out of but for Harley is game on. If we put them away Harley will howl, bark and carry on because he is missing out.

I'd do what Beloz suggested. Give him treats and stuff while you have the hose so that he associated hose with food.

All three of them hate the hose. I never even bothered to see if they liked it until i was washing the car one avo. Just for fun i called them over to have a look at they all took off and hid once they saw it - didn't even get the chance to squirt them! Doesn't bother me though, we don't even water our garden lol the only time the hose comes out is to clean the footpath or the car.

Mojo is the same. My last 2 dogs hated the hose and i always thought it would be cool to have a dog that chases the hose and sprinklers.
Well........it was fun for the first few weeks but now i cant water my gardens or wash the cars without this mad dog going crazy, squashing my plants and jumping up on the car to eat the bloody water. It gets really old, really fast if i'm busy trying to get somthing done.
On the bright side though if i cant be bothered walking him in the arvo i'll let him chase it for 20 minutes or so until he's knackered.
I shouldn't whinge about him chasing it though if the next day i make it a big game out of it....Oh well.

Nero doesn't like the hose either. He isn't scared of it but he looks deeply offended when we squirt water on him and takes off sulking. I find that surprising given it's next to impossible to keep him out of any other kind of water: pools, creeks, oceans, stinking dams, muddy puddles...

As soon as someone picks up the hose here, both my dogs go an dhide. They both hate it, probably because in hot weather I call them over and hose them off whether they want it or not.

Whats really funny though is, if you aim it at Barneys face, he thinks its great to snap and jump at it and will do it for ages...hes a bit of a contradiction.
