Default Help.. Sick lab puppy & no answers

Our new little purebred lab puppy (12 wks) hasn't been well the last week. It started with dishcharge from the eyes and then lumps on the eyelid/eyelash area. We then noticed he had bumps on the inside of his ears and Infection. Have seen 2 vets and both are stumped with what it is. He has had cortisone injection, strong antibiotics , eye and ear drops. It has now moved to his mouth area, lumps all around... His glands in the neck are very swollen. Poor little fella... Very worried.. Anyone have any idea what it might be?
Back to the vet tomorrow for the third time

Puppy Strangles?? Sounds very like it, with the ear involvement and lymph nodes up. The name strangles comes from the fact that they can swell to the point of suffocation.

Would need immune system treatment - corticosteroids and the right antibiotics. Aggressive treatment is required. It can take 8 weeks to run it's course but can be fatal if untreated.

I'm sorry to hear about your sick pup. Personally I have no idea but how long have you had the pup and has he had these symptoms since before you got him? Maybe the breeder has an idea about it and hasn't been up front with you? Otherwise it sounds like you are doing the absolute right thing by going to the vet, even though they have no idea what it is.

Definitely seems to fit the puppy strangles symptoms, from that wikipedia article.

If you have a choice of vets in your area, maybe you can ask if they have had experience with puppy strangles when you call for an appointment? Might save you some time and worry if you can find one who has treated it before?

Shadow underwent surgery to get some skin biopsies. This was to rule out other things, but generally the feeling was that it was puppy strangles. By last night he was just looking dreadful and was thankfully able to start his steroid treatment. I was so pleased to start medicating him! Today he is already showing signs of improvement and isn't as puffy.. So it definitely is puppy strangles. Most vets haven't even seen it down our way. Thanks so much again for your help nattylou in pointing me in the right direction.

The breeder hadn't had any reports from the other pups but was going to check on them for me.. If there had been another case we could have started treatment earlier.. He didn't get back to me... Disappointing but he was a one off breader... Next time I would choose a regular breeder as I believe puppy strangles is hereditary

    :-)

I'm happy that you got a diagnosis and were able to start treatment. Hope your pup gets back to normal very soon.
