Sure. But first, tell me what you think it means when you say a dog "has a complex"?

Why would we write off behaviour that we can address and explain, by saying it's because the dog "has a complex"? What purpose does that label serve?

It sounds like anthropomorphizing to me.

Oskar's last day at puppy school is this afternoon, hopefully he graduates honourably lol.

To be honest, I love the off the leash playtime, it is informal and it lets the instructor see how they interact with the other puppies. Oskar likes to hump another male lab puppy at classes, so unless we saw that, we wouldn't know how to rectify that. It's great seeing him rough and tumble with another english staffy x bull terrier, they have become great little mates! Oskar was placed into a class specifically for medium/large breeds.

Okay if you want to sound real smart with big words I have never seen or heard of before then go.
The complex is that as soon as the family puts their hand down towards the dogs mouth it snaps at them. So this pup at that time had a complex thinking that as soon as a hand heads for the mouth area, that hand is only there to take away the food.

LOL it's not about using big words, it's just the idea that we are humanising the dog by putting a label on it like saying "it has a complex".

The dog sounds as if it is resource guarding which is a normal and common behaviour that can be addressed with the right methods.

I hope that is what the puppy school instructor explained to them and I hope they were shown how to fix the problem effectively and safely.

Anyway this thread is now getting OT

In responce to this I don't think they were given much to work with at home with this little pup.
But I found that puppy classes to be useful for me to see how well my boy was with other dogs.

    Obedience is different.
This is where you have to maintain control over your dog.
We like to go early so that Murphy can have a meet and greet if the other owner allows it to happen that is.
Then when it is class time you have to make sure that the he is listening to you and not wanting to play again.
It is a time for play and a time to listen. And they seem to understand real quick to the difference between the two.
Hope it all goes well and post up how things are progressing.

Oh yes, I totally agree. I realise it is different. I have two semi obedient children (lol they are quite good actually) and I want an obedient dog. I got some recommendations today, so I will be looking into that over the next few weeks, he just needs his last vaccination first. Exciting times ahead
