    Default Toilet Training Outside

I have two jack russel x australian terrier pups which are coming up to 6 months old. we trained them to go to the toilet inside on newspaper which by about 4 months was working pefectly. now we have installed a doggy door and are now trying to change their toilet habits to going oustide and feel like we are starting the toilet training all over again ! we have fake grass outside which they have used since we got them the times that they have been outside and have also put newspaper down outside so they can see that its moved and although they do go outside sometimes there are now there are accidents inside again as they are obviously confused and with us not being home all day we dont have much control in sending them outside eachtime they need to go ! does anyone have any pointers or has been through this themselves ? will they eventually understand that they need to go outside ??

i think you'll have to pretty much start from scratch. So take them outside at regular intervals and praise them abundantly when they do their business.

Eventually, yes..but you do need to start from scratch again to be honest.

Some people say you need to gradually move the newspaper outside. So move it a metre or two every day until it is where you want them to go.

I personally would probably just remove the paper and clean the inside area really well. With vinegar and water. Normal cleaning products wont remove the urine smell to dogs. From there it is back to watching them like hawks, if they walk off the the area they used to pee in..take them outside. And praise praise praise.

Is it possible to leave them outside whilst you're out during the day?

    Thankyou for your replies.
The paper only moved from one side of the glass to the other after getting the dog door put in, we had paper on both sides for a bit but i figured that was telling them its still ok to go inside so its now been removed and we have taken the rugs that were under the paper outside too so there shouldnt be any smells inside. They could be left outside all day but they are inside dogs and we dont have a kennel or anything for them, if the weather was warmer we could prob do it and then they wouldnt have a choice !
Im worried that we have undone all the training from before and that they will now develop bad habits.
I will check for the other threads too on the subject

If they're not getting the message with the newspaper outside, I would just remove it altogether. And then start with taking them outside yourself when you have a couple of days at home. The trick as always is to set them up for success, but that is a bit hard to do if you're not home obviously! But hopefully it won't take them long to get it. Toilet training issues are so annoying!

I think its better to start it all over again, it wont take long for them to learn to eliminate outside if you will just do it regularly.

That is why our Breeder stopped using the newspaper toilet training years ago. We had similar issues and had to start form scratch again. One of our newfies (many years ago) would still occasionally do her business on hubbies Sunday Age beside the chair whilst he was still reading it. LOL...he hated that.
Lots of rewards when they go out side and take them out very frequently, Good luck
