    Default Advice Needed

We are getting a puppy next Saturday. We are unsure whether to get a crate or playpen? She will sleep inside and I plan to toilet train of course. Unsure what to do...?? Any advice welcome!

    Thanks!!

You do what you think is best and do the things that fit your own situation. Many people crate and get great results and peace of mind when using them. I however have never crated, never wanted to or had the need to. I have inside where when they were young I had baby gates to stop them getting where I did not want them to. They slept in a pen with a cozy dog box outside when young too. They toilet trained well even though there were a few accidents and now they go to the door or wake one of us if they need to go out.

If we go out they are in the enclosed backyard or in their pen which encompasses 3 large trees and a shed for sleeping.

I don't need crates in my situation but I sure would consider it if I felt I needed to.

I use both. The playpen surrounds the crate snd forms an area for me that can confine the dog for whatever is necessary, and allows me the option of leaving the crate door open... Now I have a crate each for my two dogs inside a playpen on a slate floored area... Keeps them from running straight in on the carpet when they come inside etc etc

It is up to your individual situation and needs, as Di said.

Thank you we ended up buying a playpen for now (gotta love gumtree) and we will assess the situation once she is here. We also have a bathroom we can use plus a baby gate. I just want her to have some space away from the kids

It is most important that a pup/dog can get away from kids when they wish to.
I would be educating the kids that a certain area is the pup's only and out of boiunds to them. The bathroom or laundry can be the coldest room in the house too so so a bit of insulating between floor and bed is a must. Maybe cardboard from boxes so it doesn't matter if chewed. Dog proof as much as possible, believe that everything will be chewed and work back from there.

I just have a dog bed. Dog is taught to go to bed and children are taught when dog is on bed, its time to leave it alone

I'm hoping it will be like that when my kids are older. My 1yr old doesn't understand too much right now lol
