    Default Deaf Puppy

HI just wondering if anyone can share there experiences with having a deaf puppy/dog? Thanks

I bred a deaf pup a few years ago... she was a white stafford... at about 12 weeks of age she approached a dog who was telling her off and she didn't hear the warning signs and was bitten quite badly... her elbow was shattered... she recovered and went to a fantastic home where she was the only dog with a lady who was home all the time... during her time with me she learnt sign language and was able to sit, stay, come ... the main concern for deaf dogs is to make sure they are safe and always always always on lead unless in a controlled environment.... the funny thing was I was the only person who agreed that Ice was deaf, even the vet couldnt tell, because she learnt to adapt so well and appeared to respond to doors opening etc... I'm on floor boards and I'm sure she felt the vibrations... she is a very clever dog...

oh to teach her as a pup I used small socks with dirt in them and knotted to throw towards her to get her attention... I found these worked better than water spray which was suggested to me at the time... I also made up my own hand signals... and had signals for good girl, bickie, sit, come which she learnt really quickly...

Thanks Kimbastaff we are picking up our french bulldog up on the 1st of may and he is deaf. Ive read up heaps on the hand signals and have some that im going to use that i feel comfortable with. I work from home so he will have someone with him all the time. I know that they are different breeds but did your dog learn the commands quickly?
