    Default Opinion on Breed?

    Hi Guys

My boyfriend and i are the proud owners of a 12 week old puppy called buckley. The lady we bought him from told us his mother is a staffy and the father a staffxlabrador, however we never got to meet the parents.

Not that it matters too much to us, because we all ready love him to bits, but over the past few weeks a lot of people have been questioning if he is indeed a staffyxlab. Many people have come up to us in the park and asked if he is a ridgeback cross (we have noticed he does have a prominent ridge down his back when scared or excited) ...he is a very loud, boisterous boy, and such a handful at times!

Here are some pictures, would love some opinions on what breed you think he is?

He is very cute. I dont really know about the breed but he looks like he has staffy. I have a friend with a staffy lab X and he looks very much like your little dog although time will tell as he matures.

Many dogs get a ridge that stands up along their back when they are aroused so it certainly doesnt mean that he has ridgeback in him although anything is possible.

thanks i think he's a little cutie too! i'm a little biased though haha.

i have a friend that has a mastifxstaffy and he looks nearly identical to buckley..maybe it's just that they both have more staffy in them than anything. the ridgeback train of thought only came along because so many people were suggesting it. His hair on his spine is a little darker and the hair a little thicker but it's definitely not standing up all the time like a true ridgeback.

but yes, anything is possible i guess!

Im leaning more to Pit Bull than SBT with maybe some Greyhound.
Don't see much Lab at all.
As Kala said, not all Ridgebacks have a ridge. The hair doesn't stand up, it just goes back the other way

I'd go with Pit Bull X Lab if he was mine. He's absolutely gorgeous.

He looks like staffy cross to me.

I wouldn't be worried about his background. You've bought a cross bred dog, he could have giraffe in him for all you know and if breed was something that meant something to you, I figure you would have bought a purebred dog.

    He looks sweet.

    Hes very cute

I see some staff....Dont agree with the pitbull sugggestion, he doesnt have the right mouth IMO. And Agree about lab, finding that one a bit hard to swallow.

However, IMO, it is really hard to pick what breeds could be in a pup but you can sometimes get a better idea when they are adults, though of course with mutts ya never know if you dont meet the parents,

Have fun with him, he looks like an absolute sweety

He could very well be a labxstaffy, whenever a staffy is mixed in with any breed the characteristics tend to take over, those eyes, the ears, they are in just about every staffy mix and tend to make the other breed used just a shadow.

Staffy's have a much much broader head, shorter muzzle and bigger mouth. Some will remember JTDNTB's Pittie Bailey, who had an incredibly similar head and a long snout. Not all PB's have block head, while I would say a very large majority of SBT's do (my work involves meeting a huge amount of different breeds everyday).
The last photo looks particularly Greyhound.
The colour sable(I think its sable?) is also common in Pits and Greys, but not Labs and SBTs.

Could someone please explain the Lab characteristics?

Hey I have a friend with a 5 month old pure ridgeback and they look almost identical (bar the distinctive ridge).

I am by no means an expert, but just saying they look VERY similar!

Oh and my last pup looked like a pure SBT as a pup, grew up nothing like one, LOL! Wrong shape head, wrong length legs, wrong ears.... it's funny looking at puppy photos as they look nothing like what she grew up to be! With the exception of her colour!

Almost every dog I have owned has been a staffy mix and the eyes give it away every time I reckon. And pup has a very thick muzzle compared to it's head. He actually looks very similar to a boxer/staffy mix I had except he was red and white but as a youngster he had a very similar face shape.

Myf, I dont really see lab either tbh. I am actually thinking shepherd and something similar to slim down the face.

Pitties have a lot of wrinkles round the mouth, well thats not quite right but their mouths are very distinctive IMO and even when cross bred they tend to take on the mouth. Also lots of wrinkles on top of the head.

I would wait til pup is fully grown, can get a better idea of mix then I rekcon. I love trying to guess breeds in mutts, ya can never know without seeing the parents but its fun trying lol

I dont even use colour as a breed estimate because mongrels can have any combination or solid colour at all.
