Well that question could open a whole can of worms.
This is how I see things within the breed these days, just my opinion ofcourse.
There are GSD's breed for the show ring & GSD's breed for there working lines & health.
The showdog is a finer build, shorter & very sloped backends.
The working GSD is of heavier bone, broader skulls/muzzles, taller & have a straighter topline.

GSD's actually if registered with the GSD club have very strict ruling on breeding. the dogs/bitches even have to be classified at about eighteen month before they get licensed.
I have a lot of friends with GSD's....We do our obedience with a lot of GSD's and go Tracking with them to. If you really want contacts i can ask my friends and get more info for you.
You only have to ask for their paperwork (parents registration) and check their tattoos to see that they are pure

Your breed club is your best friend. I'm not sure what you think a German Shepherd should look like but if you've been to registered breeders (not from the newspaper or friends who have had puppies) and still think they aren't pure then you should really investigate further what a purebred GSD looks like.

As for your breed club, go to their website (whether it's German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria, QLD, etc) and look at things like the breed standard (which is what breeders are breeding and showing to) as well as breeders registered with the club, look at events near you and think about going to them to see the parents of your future pup.

If you need a puppy right now and can't be bothered waiting then I can't help as the only option to get a puppy immediately is not supported or condoned by me or this forum.

And i'm also curious why you HAVE to get a puppy...

But Newfie, there are 2 types within the reg dogs or do the older type now not pass classification?

I am curious OP, are you hoping to get a purebred German Shepherd to breed with your "snow dog"?

T had a look at german shepard clubs & have to say they are not the old type, GSD where not that small or have those such full on hindquaters yrs ago even in the show ring.

The dogs on this pg are not my cup of tea & nothing like the upright working GSD's mostly used by army & police. That I will post next.

I know the GSD now does look quite different. My Dad used to breed them and ours were german work dogs, still used for stock. But the GSD club is truly trying to get their breed back to good sound dogs. you only have to go to a GSD specialty show and see how much the dogs have to work in the ring. No way an unsound dog (or owner ) could do all that work. There are still two types and there are still obvious differences.

But if you are really into GSD's go to a specialty GSD show, quite an eye opener. A positive one.........Breed improvement scheme http://www.gsdcv.org.au/node/52

The czech type shepherd is what one of my friends has here...he also enters Herding type competitions with his bitch

One of my other friends has the more german line. i found your websites interesting and have passed them on. they might already know them, but you never know
