Default Who's Responsible For The Litter

    Hi,

Hoping someone can help. I'm just wondering, in Australia who is responsible for a litter or puppies when they weren't planned, the owner of the dog or the bitch?

    Thanks

The person who didn't get the bitch desexed, or put her on the pill, or make sure she was secure when she was in season.

Half the time, there are multiple fathers to a litter when the bitch is not secured while she is in season.

So I would always blame the owner of the bitch. It's nice if the owner of the dog helps out, but if the bitch owner has been careless, who knows which dog fathered the puppies? Most of the time the bitch owner has no idea which dog(s) did it.

And you need fences higher than 2m to keep horny dogs out. You need a strong cage with dog proof mesh on all sides including the bottom and the top.

I'm going with both as well, that's if you know who did the deed.
If you own entire dogs you have to be responsible enough to manage them.

In most cases of unplanned litters it will be the bitches owner.
Unless of course the dogs owner was aware and had prior arrangments in place with said litter.

Most times even papered dogs it will be the bitches owners responsability.

I'd say both. Without the bitch there would be no puppies. Without the dog there would be no puppies.

I agree. Both should take responsibility.

I would be wanting a DNA test to be sure my dog did it, not that I would not help rehome pups for anyone in trouble, but I would not want to pay bills for pups that might not belong to my dog, that is, if he could get out in the first place. Usually he could not get the chance, but still, accidents can happen and dogs are resouceful when it comes to a bitch on heat.
The bitch owner ought to know their bitch is on heat so realy are the main one who should take all precautions possible

The human in charge who let the dogs mate is responsible as far as I'm concerned. If you both had a hand in it, then you are both responsible.

Sorry, but why are you even arguing about this?

I have an entire bitch and there is no way in hell a male is getting to her when she's on heat. But if I was irresponsible enough to let her get pregnant, I would take full responsibility of the pups.

They are not people where both father and mother are responsible. They're dogs ! It is ALWAYS the bitch's owner who takes responsibility , for not having her speyed , for not taking precautions in making sure she is secure from getting out or from dogs getting in to her AND for the subsequent litter. The owner of the bitch is responsible for looking after her during pregnancy and for the pups when they are born. Plain and simple !!!
