    Default Scab Undereye??!!

    Hi Everyone,

I hope i haven't done something really bad. My puppy gets a bit of gunk build up in his eyes so every couple of days i give it a clean.

This morning, i thought there was a bit of dried stuff just under his eye on the lower lid. I dabbed at it with a damp bit of tissue to try and soften it to get it off but it wouldn't budge so i gave up.

about 20min later i had another look at his face to check how it was going and the "gunk" had partially fallen off but underneath the skin was pink and raw looking!!! i think it was actually a scab which i accidently helped to fall off!!!

I rang the RSPCA and they said not worry unless it started to look infected or his eating/toileting patterns changed...but i still feel really terrible about it. I hope i haven't hurt him or made his injury worse! i don't even know how he would have gotten injured so close to his eye!!

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? (sorry about the long post btw)

    Hi, how worrying.
Cherry Eye? Perhaps you can read some articles on them and see the symptoms are the same.

    Hi hachna,

thanks for your post. I googled 'cherry eye' but i don't think it sounds the same. However, found out that shih tzus are one of the breeds that can get this so definitely a good thing to be aware of so thanks!

Hi my dog got something like that, I think she scratched her eye lids when rubbing her head on the ground or had a contact allergic reaction to something like wandering jew weed.
She ended up bald around the eye for a few weeks. I just gently wiped around the eye with warm saline water to help stop any bugs.
She had scabs just under the lid too.
If it gets real bad pop in and see the vet they would have some ointment for it.
If you find yourself going through hell; Don't stay. Just keep on going.
    Beau.

    Hi azuresky,

When i read the second time, it did not sound like cherry eye. :-) My mini schnauzer had gunky eye for a week just before he had kennel cough in May, even he was vaccinated. I think the eye was the sign of his poor immune system at that time. Just to share my experience.

goop coming from the tear ducts, can be conjunctivitus. It may or may not go away by itself. Just keep cleaning it up, tissue dunked in warm salty water is good. And if the dog seems to be getting unwell generally or it gets worse, then phone your vet and ask them.

My dog sometimes gets this but so far it's always gone away on it's own. if she started doing a lot of eye rubbing, I'd be off to the vet.
