    Default Desexing

    Hi all,

Just wondering how much it is to desex a Golden Retriever male puppy?

He is 12 weeks, does their age or weight affect the pricing. Is it just a day procedure?

Also would like vet recommendations or what age you did it too, if you have any!

    Im located in Werribee, Melbourne.

    Thank you

Lots of vets will not desex before 6 months of age for hormonal reasons. I also agree with this. Your best bet is to ring vets in your area for prices. Someone here may be able to recommend one.

Most vets will say wait until they are 6 months old, and yes it's a day procedure, drop them off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. Stitches stay in for 10 days.

Best to phone around vets for prices, make sure they include pain relief in the price. You will find prices vary greatly, and it is based on weight not age. More importantly, go with a vet that you have confidence in!

Sorry Di, I should have been clearer, make sure the vets give a pain relief injection prior to doggy going home, it SHOULD be standard, but I was shocked to discover that some vets DON'T do this!

    As GAG said

Price will vary at different vets. Ours was $437 including heartworm treatment, which was $181, that we got done at the same time. But we got a discount for paying the bill on the day and only had to pay $350

My last rescue pup (male) was around the $150 mark with a vaccination, at around five months old and 15kg. I don't pay rescue rates, just normal ones.

Anaesthetics ar usually charged by weight groups, ie up to 15kg, over 15kg, over 30kg etc.

A castration is a relatively simple procedure and should be done fast and easily by any good vet (if both testicles are down that is!). If there are complications that is different, but a normal standard one should be charged as such.

Don't get stuck paying for extras like IV fluids etc for what should be a quick simple procedure. Any Vet Clinic Staff should be able to tell you exactly what's involved and not give you a big salesman pitch on what else you should be paying for.

If you're in Werribee, I'd suggest checking out the Melbourne Uni Vet Hospital. They're brilliant. We used them for our GSD's when I was younger and lived out that side.

Best place to desex your pet is at the RSPCA or Animal Protection Society. I have just desexed my pup (at the APS) and it cost me $130. Vaccinations are $65.
They do just as good job as the vets but a whole lot cheaper.
I also like the idea that you are supporting a charity.

    As others have said...
Prices do differ from place to place and whether it's a male or female; males are cheaper. There shouldn't be a big difference for the anaesthetic. Generally expect to pay between $180 and $250 all inclusive for the neutering.

Neutering should generally be done at six months of age to prevent hormonal behavioural problems.

It's a same day procedure and your dog will need to be left at the clinic for the day due to the anaesthetic.

Haven't ever used the RSPCA, but it sounds like a great idea and seems a little cheaper.

You shouldn't be worried when you take your retriever to be neutered. If you're anxious, scared or worried, your dog will sense that and in turn become more anxious themselves. It's a fairly easy procedure for males.

Talk to a couple of vet's in your area about your concern and any questions you have. That will help ease your mind and help you determine which vet to see (likely the most helpful and informative one).
