Thread: Looking for a Responsible Cross Breeder - Help!

Question Looking for a Responsible Cross Breeder - Help!

    Hi,

We've just recently moved into a new house and I am looking to buy a puppy. I've never owned one before and want to be sure that we purchase from a reputable breeder.

Given our space and lifestyle, we've been recommended to look at some cross breeds such as a Maltese x Shihtzu or a Maltese x Caverlier. I know there is a lot of backlash about 'designer dogs' but the reason we are not looking at a pure breed is because we've heard that cross-breeds generally have less health problems and some have better temperaments.

I want to make sure we don't end up buying from a puppy farm/ puppy mill and so are avoiding all pet shops. Problem is that I have no idea where to start. We would really appreciate any recommendations of where to buy from. We live in metro Victoria and would prefer to buy locally so we can visit the breeder and meet the puppy's parents etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered!

I'm afraid the words "reputable breeder" and "crossbred" do not go together.
Reputable breeders do not have any need to breed crosses with anything!

My advice to you is to research dog breeds that appeal to you, and when you come across one that you like which ticks all your boxes for needs, exercise requirements, character, temperament etc, then look around at reputable REGISTERED breeders of that particular breed.

well...honestly...buying a cross breed is buying from a Backyard Breeder, so why is that any better than supporting Puppy Mills really....sigh

Why not a pure Cavalier....Maltese...or Shihtzu?

Why do I feel like I am sounding like a broken record every time this subject comes up...sigh

    WHERE did you hear this?!?

Cross breeding is just mixing 2 breeds...doubling the health issues due to 2 different types of genetics and making temperament and health issues close to IMPOSSIBLE to trace!!!!!

Hi! And welcome to the forum!

About 8 weeks ago I thought EXACTLY the same way you did! I purchased a Cavalier X Cavoodle puppy because I thought she would shed less!

Well I have since learn't I was wrong! Very wrong! Cross-breeds are not healthier than purebred puppies. You cannot be garunteed of their health or temprement. Where as with a purebred pup you can. A LOT of purebred breeders offer health garuntees and even 6 weeks free pet insurance. I am certain you will NEVER find a cross bred pup with that type of bonus.

Purebred breeders (responsible ones) only breed from parents who are healthy and have had the relevant health tests. They ensure both parents have great temprements which in turn means the puppies will have lovely temprements too!

I love my puppy, who is now 16 weeks old, and would never give her back! But I wish I knew then what I knew now! Having a puppy, especially for the first time, can be so stressful! And I think having the support of the breeder (who you can usually contact as many times as you like with all the silly little questions you have) and the health garuntee would make first time puppy ownership A LOT less stressful!

    Hope that helps!

It's what the "designer dog" trade sprout to the general public. And its easy to believe if you are a first time puppy owner with NO doggy experience.

How about contacting some rescue groups in your area, many have dogs living in foster care and will be able to help match your lifestyle to the right dog. Especially if you've never owned a dog before they will be able to talk to you about exercise, training, grooming (the breeds you mention will need to be groomed around every 8 weeks so expect $60-80 a pop), etc. Dogs in rescue will come health checked, vaccinated, wormed, desexed etc, whereas most byb'ers don't do this.

Sorry, not in Vic so not sure who to recommend, but other Vic people may be able to give you some suggestions.
