gosh sometimes some of you guys are to harsh..
this person has come here looking for advice and help they are obviously not as knowledgeable as some of you but instead of learning (or not) from making mistakes they are doing their research..i mean your advice is great but i think you need to soften the delivery so you dont sound so hostile!!

if you are dead set on a cross breed why not have a look in the pounds or shelters there are lots of x's looking for a forever home =)

Most of the dogs I have ever had were crosses, from a pound or strays. I too endorse looking at pounds and rescue websites. Lots of pups and adult dogs there.
My blue heeler x pup went to a wonderful home through rescue.

Any posts made under the name of Di_dee1 one can be used by anyone as I do not give a rats.

Holy Hell you guys are quick off the mark lol! I do something else for a few hours and come back to 6 pages!!!!

Right, and as my name implies, I come to you from a rescue perspective. I would advise you to get on PetRescue - find your new best friend! and have a good look. As you have already learnt, a dog/pup from a rescue org will not only save another life but also you will find they are already wormed, heart wormed, vaccinated, microchipped and desexed. You will no doubt find your malteseX****zu dog here or any other number of combinations. As far as temperment goes at about 7 or 8 months what you see is what you get. Have a GOOD long look at the dog/pup with their foster carer as this is the person the animal is showing it's true colours with given they are generally kept for 3 weeks to assess temperment before meeting potential forever parents.

Also you can ask a zillion questions from rescuers and be pretty well assured you will get honest answers as from the perspective of any reputable rescue group, we don't want that dog back!!! Not because we don't like it but because by the time they have found us, their lives have generally been less than ordinary and we just want to see them live out their days loved and admired without a care in the world.

I think someone mentioned you were in Victoria? Vic Dog Rescue (google them) would be a great place to start - please feel free to mention Shar Pei Rescue sent you on over and listen to what they have to tell you, because they will not make stuff up for the sake of hearing their own voice!

Good luck and remember this is probably a bigger commitment (you could well have this family member LONGER)!!! than buying a new car! So research, research, research!!

I've just skimmed the thread.. so sorry if anyone has already said this...

What I would really advise any new dog owner to be very cautious of heavily coated dogs like malt x or shihtzu x. The coats on these guys needs SOOOO much attention. Beginners really aren't able to deal with it. Especially face coat getting in eyes and mouth etc, and backside coat getting clogged with poo etc.

I know fluffy pups are adorable but make sure you consider how much time and money you can devote to grooming before you take the plunge.

There is a purebred dog variety to suit every situation, don't get fooled by the health claims. They are unscientific and not right. But they make alot of money for some people, Don Burke included.

Most designer cross breeds come from less than healthy stock, and any pup can only be as good as where it comes from. If you breed together two unhealthy dogs you can't possibly get healthy pups - it's impossible.
