Default Do I Need to Worm Her Again???

Ok ... I warn you this may be long so please bare with me.

I have been worming Poppy every two weeks with Drontal tablets.

I wormed her on the monday after we got her (1st Feb)

Then again on the 14th (but this time with Advocate).

On the 17th of Feb we went to the vet for her 2nd lot of vac's and to get her chipped. The vet said Advocate was not stong enough for worming puppies and that we needed to give her a Drontal tablet as well so I did. The vet said that I could use the Advocate for fleas and mites but needed to worm her with Drontal every month from 3 months of age.

Poppy turned 12 weeks on Sunday. Should I worm her now with Drontal (2 weeks since her last dose) or wait until the 14th when I use Advocate and THEN give her Drontal too?

I know thats a bit of a complicated question so thanks if you were able to take it all in!

I would give her her Drontal worming tablet now, then at the same time every month until she reaches the age where the worming only needs to be done every 3 months.

    Ok, Thanks guys!

The vet spoke like I wouldn't need to worm for another month but since she is only JUST 12 weeks I thought that odd. Will buy a Drontal tablet on the way home today. Then Dronotal every month until 6 months.

Do you think using Drontal AND Advocate every month is a bit of an overkill? What product could I use instead of the Advocate? She didn't have the heart worm vac so need something for them too...I *think* Drontal covers heart worms though??

    Oh so confusing!!!

I get Interceptor from the vets...cover all gut worms AND heart worm. I treat mine with Advantix for fleas and ticks (we are in paralysis tick area). If I was treating with Advocate...I would STILL be giving worm treatment

If you are giving her Drontal Broad Spectrum all-warmer, no it doesn't do heart worm.

Amy...have a chat to your vet about an all-wormer that includes heart worm like Interceptor. If you have not yet treated her for heart worm...you MUST have a heart worm test done at the vets prior to commencing it.

I can highly recommend Sentinel - Main difference between it and Interceptor is Sentinel covers fleas too.

I think advocate covers heart worm! Maybe I will switch to sentinal ange? How mch is it? What would I do for ear mites and other mites? Does sentinal cover that?

revolution covers heart worm. Not sure about advocate.

when Frosty was little, she got the heart worm shot, the C5 shot, and a 3 monthly wormer tablet - not sure the name of it. She got drontil 3 montly doses after that. When I got the annual C5 this year, I switched to Revolution which comes with a once every 3 months wormer for the intestinal + tape worm. And the Revolution covers the heart worm & flea prevention.

I dunno if I should be treating her for anything else. Adelaide is not known for dangerous ticks.

PS none of my vets mentioned worming every month until she was 6 months.

I think with vets - as with GPs and even garden advisors - one needs to ask "what else can I do, what else do i need to do?", ie find out what your alternatives are. Some of them just plug something that the drug company wants them to (like Hills Science diet) without really thinking about it. They will give you a good answer if you ask the right / enough questions though.
