Thread: Very Itchy Puppy!

Okay, that's really interesting about the brushing... I brush Mollie nearly every day but mostly because she absolutely loves it - you can almost see the drawl coming out of her mouth! As soon as she sees the brush, she just lays on her back, legs spread waiting for the joy!!! Mind you, it probably itches for her.

She used to get really red raw under her arms when she was about 3 months, but as soon as the hair started to grow, that stopped - now its mostly on her belly which is still quite bare.

She's a true redhead with quite fine hair, so that might have something to do with it. She developed a bit of a rash yesterday so I put some cortisone cream on her after a bath in the medicated wash, then I gave her an antihistamine and its gone today.

I did lots of research last night and discovered omega 3 is apparently really good for itchy pups, so will discuss that option with my vet this week - see if I can get her onto some capsules.

She has progressively gotten better over the past few weeks (after her intital dose on antihistamines) so i am hoping that she gets through this phase.

The vet has suggested that it may even subside in winter, but I'll still keep investigating until the problem is resolved!

Despite everything, she's a gorgeous little girl and I am trying to train her to lay on a sheet when she's out in the backyard - its not going so well, but we'll get there.

I'm hoping your pup will grow out of it. Tara seems to have. She still scratches, but it hink it's more pschocematic. (?) She's a bit of a drama queen & hypochondriac. Spirit's tummy is the worst area as well. Very red & no hair. I suppose I should take a few piccies & post so you can see if your condition is the same.

Talk to your vet about giving your dog an omega mixture in his/her food each day. This can really help, and often the differnce in a short period of time is remarkable.

    All the best.

I put "Essential 6" on their coats because of the Omega content for months. It made no difference what so ever unfortunately, so I stopped. They get fish oil caps in their food every day. They have fish once a week instead of meat. The only real success I've had in decreasing the itching is a daily groom.

    Thanks all,

I started her on omega capsules so we'll see how she goes with them. The good thing is she hasn't gotten worse this week while its been hot, so maybe I'm gradually getting it under control.

She doesn't have the red raw skin like she used to which is definitely a good thing.

Not really sure how to add photos to a signature, so will see if these links work.

P.S - the split in her nose is a birth defect. She came from a litter of cleft pallatte pups (three of which unfortunately had to be put down). She started forming the cleft, but pulled through.

We've been really lucky because while she has quite a hefty overbite, her adult teeth have started coming through and there is plenty of room.

The breeder said she wouldn't win any beauty contests, but I think she's ADORABLE!!!
