A lot of it depends on the dogs themselves. Some bitches are real tarts and some dogs are obsessively randy. With the average bitch there really shouldn't be any problems so long as the owner is sensible.

I used to breed and show dogs and I like to spay my own pet bitches midway between their first and second season. I've never had any problems when my girls are on heat. The important thing is not to advertise the fact your dog is in season. Don't take her for a walk. She will leave a pee-mail trail telling every dog in the area she is available. If you must walk her then put her in the car and drive to an area away from home.

I always kept my in season girls in the house. They only went outside under supervision. Some bitches (especially Collie breeds) are very clean and leave no blood spots at all. If you have a "bloody" bitch you can buy Bitches Britches or similar for wearing indoors.

Earlier this year my Sheltie Kenna had her first season. Unfortunately it was a week after the arrival of our new 20 month old Whippet Strada, an entire male. I contemplated putting one of them in kennels but then decided to brave it out. Strada had the front yard and the front of the house. Kenna had the back yard and the back of the house. The only real danger time was mid cycle when Kenna was a real tart for 4 or 5 days. Extra vigilance was needed then but overall the whole thing went quite smoothly. No accidents.

Our yard is fenced for Deerhounds so the fences are very high and non climbable. Even so I would never leave a bitch in season outside unsupervised. Without the complication of the male Whippet, Kenna's season would have been a breeze to cope with. Extra play time made up for no walks.

This is not meant to be critical of other people's experiences. It's simply a system that has worked well for me on many occasions. Hopefully it may be of help to others in the future.

Great post DH, once again. Ah, stop blushing!

I once chose to buy those bitch's britches. It was soooooooo funny. Come to think about it though, it was easier with the dog than it was with a human baby. I just didn't know that at the time. Lol.

I wonder what you told the people who enquired about your puppies from the first litter. What information did you give them?

The reasons for my questions are:

    1. Were you not as ignorant as me regarding unregistered AmStaffs being classified as Pitt Bulls - a prescribed breed in SA?

    2. You started the thread Bsl?????...wasn't that to gain information regarding BSL in your state, because you didn't know the Laws?

As it stands...you own a prescribed breed. Whether we like it or not...the Law is in place. I do not believe in attacking certain breeds! But I sure as hell do not believe in breeding with them either.

If you didn't know about the BSL Laws in your state...the "Pitt Bull" tag your bitch (and now her pups) have hanging over their head...the restrictions that comes with owning a prescribed breed...what possible info could you have given the buyers of puppies from your first litter?

Did they know upfront that their puppies was classified as a prescribed breed in SA? Did they know the harsh penalties which could arise from owning a prescribed breed? Where they told not to register their puppies as AmStaff X, because that is the same as saying they are Pitt Bulls and could put the pup's life at risk?

Ultimately...breeding from a prescribed breed is endagering the lives of the pups. It is putting a lot of worry and strain onto the owners! Any prescribed breed MUST be desexed (even though I can't see there is an age barrier attached to the statement), but I would maybe think it is before they age of 6 months?!?...correct me if I am wrong! You are not allowed to advertise the sale of these puppies...you are not allowed to sell them or give them away!!!

I am trying to see this from your point of view. Lets say it was the SBT that had the prescribed breed hanging over their head. I wouldn't dare breed with them! I would be too afraid that when people came to see the pups...if one of the buyers were a Council worker/ranger out to track down unregistered "Pitt Bull like" dogs/bitches!

I wouldn't be able to look people in the eye and tell them that it will be "OK" as long as you don't sell, don't breed and don't give away this dog...as long as you keep it muzzled in public, make sure it is desexed....keep it in a safe enclosure and physically restrained at all times! New owner will be in constant fear of someone dobbing them in to the Council for owning a Pitt Bull like dog!

What sort of bloody life is THAT for a dog!!!!! In the end...who pays the ultimate price for this...the freaking dog does...with its life!!!!!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DO ......GET THE PUPS PTS!!!

You say you are against BSL yet you expect people whom love the breed not to have one due to the life they will have ....is this not giving the government what they want.......a breed that will be NO MORE!

I was ignorant in a respect to BSL etc because I thought that they were banned FULL STOP!! I told the people whom inquired about the pups as much as I knew myself and told them to research AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE as I have done!

Im not sure what you expect me to do Clea as the 'deed is done' ! I have learnt from my mistakes and I certainly did not join this forum to be belittled!

    A VERY good point, Judge.

I know next to nothing about bull breeds and all this stuff. actually, that's an understatement - I know 'jack ****!'

What I do know is that all of us at some stage make mistakes, some more than others. Some intentional, some by accident. That's life.

It seems to me you have learnt a lot from all this in a very short period of time. It also appears to me that you are dealing with the problems concerning this litter in a very responsible way.

Hey...hang on a minute! The Government hasn't banned your breed! They have banned unregistered AmStaffs/Pitt Bulls!

There is no way of tracking health issues...temperament issues etc from "backyard bred" unregistered dogs/bitches of ANY breed and/or mixes! For sure the Pitt Bull has been made the scape goat! But by continuing the cycle of unregistered AmStaffs...you are adding fuel to the fire IMO. Am I worried about my breed ending up on the BSL list when people continue to defy the BSL Laws (crossing AmStaffs and SBT's)...hell yes I am. Am I concerned about the registered AmStaff being the next on the list and your breed for sure will be no more...hell yes I am!

I understand that you are concerned with your breed ending up on the BSL list!

How have they not banned my breed? My girls are not papered....if the council performed the 22 point test on them they would certainly be PTS! however Tyson is SBT X Bully and he would almost certainly be PTS if tested using the 22 point system!

How can you say they are not banned? any bully type dog that is a cross breed is basically under the BSL restrictions! Thats what a pit bull is.....a cross breed!

AND I AM NOT DELIBERATELY ADDING FUEL TO THE FIRE!

you did not answer my question clea?! What do you expect me to do now? get the pups PTS for my own stupidity?!

I am trying to deal with this situation the best way I can!

If you dont agree with it then that is fine....I do not expect you to! Its is quite simple clea dont read any of the threads I post!

I think I will be asking Morgan to cancel this thread.
