    Question Just a Few Question's

    Hi one and all,

I dont mean to sound rude or talk out of place, but i was wondering where people stand on buying from a pet shop? I get the feeling that people dont like pet shop puppie's and i was just wondering why? Is it becuase you dont know where the puppy has come from? Or more a personal choice?

Also do you think people should only get pound dog's or pure breed's dog's? Is there a middle ground?

We are getting our baby in just over a week but it got me thinking where do people go to get a puppy when they decide they want a new member of the family! And i thought you all would know something if not alot about it.

Personally, I have never bought from a pet shop. Mine have been rehomes, or from a litter a family member's dog had. I also would look at dogs in a pound or rspca first. I guess that is because I have always preferred an older dog not a puppy. I have no problems at all about it being a pure or x breed. It, for me, depends on the type of dog that fits with us and we fit with them. All needs taken into account. Many small petshops out here are not selling from puppy farms but byb litters. Same with their more common birds. I asked, I also got the name of a woman my petshop has had birds from in the past. I went there and got Bub (cockatiel)

As a registered breeder you are not allowed to give pets to pet shops for them to sell!

So...you can be pretty sure these poor, darling animals come from BYB...puppy mills etc.

Why would you buy one from a pet shop anyway?!? A lot of their "pure bred" puppies cost between $800 - $1000 and you would be able to get one from a REGISTERED breeder for around the same amount AND get guarantees etc etc.

I absolutely HATE the fact that Pet shops can sell puppies and kittens and it should be BANNED!!!

I am not a registered breeder and I did not say mine were going to a shop. I said that the ones around here get them when people approach them with unwanted byb litters. I also did not say that I condoned that in any way.

OMG i would never ever buy any dog from a petshop or a byb, not after knowing where & how the dogs are poorly treated. Petshops & BYB pets are only a $$$$$ profit business that have no bloody concern for the dogs welfare or the breed in general.

My 1st SBT came from a registered breeder & my current SBT was a rescue dog.
My next SBT will either be a rescue dog or from a reputable registered breeder.

I have always had a breaking heart walking past pet shops in shopping malls seeing those poor puppies and kittens sitting in a glass box. Such a cruel place for a little animal to end up - scratching away in a noisy environment, having people tapping at the glass, sitting in your own urine & faeces, to make money for pet shop owners, Puppy Mills and BYB, and to be purchased on a whim by a window shopper.

I believe when you decide on a pet for your family/yourself, it is essential to research what will suit you and your circumstances and your home environment. An animal is a life, you do not just decide on a whim to introduce a new member to your home without proper research, preparation and thought.

We have done this and have now decided on our choice of breed and choice of registered breeder of this breed (after talking to and visiting several). We're patient and are on a list awaiting the new member of our family.

For us it is a massive decision to bring another life into our home, not just choose a helpless creature on a whim while in a shopping mall.

I hope and pray for the day that animals will not be sold through shops, in NSW Clover Moore has been working towards this for a number of years. I am unsure about other states. I know Oprah has been an opponent of BYB and Puppy Mills for some time.

Good question, I personally have not bought anything from a pet store. The large majority of dogs and kittens sold at a pet store are from BYB = (Back yard breeders), who are more often than not, being irrisponsible in not getting their puppy/kitten, dog or cat desexed. A registered breeder generally goes about breeding in a TOTAL different way. And I would be more than happy to go into that with you at a later stage....(don't want my chat to go on for an hour or more).
You see breeding any animal may seem quite natural and harmless, however, if and when anyone purchases an amimal from a pet shop you can almost certainly garantee that you have contributed to that person BYB again. By this I mean.....well Soooo many things really. I could literally go no and no for hours on the subect. Long story short - No I do not buy from pet stores, and try to teach everyone I know why they shouldn't buy from a pet shop either! So many people these day think it is ok to breed a litter of pups/kittens....but really don't have to foggiest idea of what is required to breed at all. Breeding any type of animal should be left up to professionals and NOT Mr Joe Blogs around the coner who hasn't got a clue and then sells thoes poor pups to a pet store which then will have a VERY uncertain future, and who also thinks it must be ok for his/her stud/bitch to mate with another to get pups/kittens. WRONG!!.
You have asked a very good question and If you have any more questions regarding this matter......I would be happy to go into greater detail. Hope this answers your questions!?
I believe breeding should be left to the breeders. If no-one brought from the pet shops then adventually they would go out of business. They are still around today because of supply and demand. It is so hard to walk past a puppy when shopping and not say aww, how cute....but really what you would be doing is encouraging that person + more people to do the same thing.
I believe that breeding should become a "profession" and only thoes with some sort of lisence to breed should do so.
Anyway I am done talking about this.......Hope this clears things up for you!

I understand where everyone is coming from completely!!! BYB puppy mills etc are disgusting and need to be stopped!! END OF STORY...

We got our girl from SAFE so she was a pound rescue, i didn't want a puppy *(heck i had enough trouble toilet training my non-fur baby let alone a furbaby haah!)

But the thing that sits in the back of my mind is "what happens when the pet shops DONT sell their "stock" aka puppies?" They end up in pounds etc dont they??

Its a bit of a devils advocate I guess, as apart of me would never ever buy from a pet shop (to be honest it's mostly the price, as others have mentioned 800 - 1000 for an animal not only do you have no idea where it's come from its health probs etc, but also no papers) but they're just going to end up where I got Chloe from anyhow so is it fair they have to sit in the pet shop for that long until they get shipped off?

I think until the government bans pet shop selling etc its a really cruel cycle and no one wins

Oh and Im a Xbreed girl, not because I think you 'get rid of the probs' or anything crazy like that, but because they're normally snubbed and I have a soft spot

Madeline was from a petshop, I didn't know about byb's and such. Knowing about those things now is enough to put me off buying from one again.
But also I dont think she's the mix I was told she was, she was a nightmare to house train. I was told she would be a laid back not very active dog, she's the complete oppisit (sp).
