Default New Lab Puppy Seems Too Mellow!

I've had my new black lab puppy for a few 2 nights and I'm concerned! At first I thought he was just tired/overwhelmed at his new home, but now after two full days I'm concerned things aren't as they should be.

He came from a back yard breeder. He was a surprise gift from a friend who knew I wanted one. He is 10 weeks old and has been vaccinated and wormed. Overall he looks healthy, his coat is shiny, although I'm slightly concerned his coat isn't quite as soft as it could be.

He lacks the energy and enthusiasm I'd expect of a lab puppy. His tail barely wags and he seems to prefer to sit around or cuddle all day. He is interested in food, but not as much as I'd expect. When I'm eating, he doesn't beg for some or even show interest. He hardly plays although he's happy to chew whatever he can find. He doesn't seem anxious but seems relatively at home - he just acts like a mellow old dog.

    A few other comments:
    • he doesn't lick
    • I've hardly seen him wag his tail
    • he doesn't seem to have much curiosity

Suggestions anyone? Could he be a sick dog? Or could it be that poor breeding means a dog with an overly mellow temperament. I like the idea of a mellow dog, but this just seems a bit too far that way.

    Hello and
I would love to chat to you, but it may have to be tomorrow. I am getting tired now and think it is best if I call it a night.
    Chat soon.

It could be that he is still settling in. When we bought Jenna home she was quite quiet for a few days. She still isn't a manic puppy but she does get the zoomies sometimes

Have you taken him for a check up at the vets. Some vets do free puppy checks, ours did.

He does seem more alive today. He's starting to play, and I've now seen him bound around a few times. For the first time today I heard him bark! A few times today he barked at me as if to say "I'm not happy!" Kind of like the bark you might get after teasing when they say "no more, give me my food!" Except no teasing. I wondered if he wanted attention, so I gave it to him, but then he sits back down and does nothing with it!

He's had hiccups a few times - seems strange. I wonder if that's normal or not.

Still puzzled and not sure what to think ...

Good to hear that he is starting to play a bit more....I am sure he will snap out of it, and you will probably long for thoes days again. Keep us posted on his progress.
    Any photos yet?

Hiccups are perfectly normal. My little Benson had them quite a bit when he was a tiny pup.

Jenna gets hiccups alot. I've read it's something they usually grow out of.

Hello and welcome to the forum

I find it a tad strange too that a 10 week old Lab pup is not a bouncing happy ball of endless energy.
I would be taking him to the vets anyway for a check up as you you know he was from a back yarder and it wouldn't hurt just to have a general overall check and voice any concerns that you have.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Well, he's due for his next vaccination shot in 9 days so that would be a good time to ask the vet.

    Here's a pic ...
